Patch, thanks for the kind words, but after this week I feel 20 years older than I am. LOL

Ran the disk again and tilled up 3 rows. Also spread 12-24-24 fertilize and a pre-emergent weed treatment recommended by Dixondale onions, where I got my slips from. Gonna try it this year and see how results are. Tilled that in after spreading. Supposed to get a little rain tomorrow then clear thru Sunday. I'm hoping it's dry enough to start planting Friday evening. I also stopped by Co-Op and picked up 12 cabbage plants, one early, and one late. Lettuce, spinach, arugala, and Brocholi.

TG, I ran across this video a couple days ago and think I'm gonna try it out. My old cages are 20+ years old and need to be replaced, so I'm gonna try a couple of these and see how they do. It might be something that holds some interest for your tomatos.

Just brought 3 packets of Green Magic F1 Broccoli seeds online.

This variety does well here in the North and that is the variety I grew from starts
brought from Bunnings that did so well.
Last season I paid 3 dollars for 4 starts and just now I paid 3 dollars per packet which contained 40 seeds.
I hope I can replicate last seasons success.

I did the same last year with my cukes and it worked pretty well. But I really like the idea on the arch. They'll stand up on their own and give much more surface to climb on. I think the tomatos will love it. And for me hopefully will make picking that much easier. With 2 herniated disk in my low back, bending over for everything just plain hurts after a while.
 
it is a much more pleasant thing to hang out over here in the gardening threads than to be where the news is posted.
I miss having a fresh homegrown tomato or cucumber. I don't even buy those big ol' nasty green cucumbers from the grocery anymore. They usually have a very bad taste.
I'm always puzzled over gardening how they say it is a fine time to plant this or that in February or March, yet occasional night-time temps can get down in the 30s.
 
Today I had delivered 2 cubic meters of compost garden blend soil.
Got 4 bags of pelleted chicken manure and a bag of mixed grain for the
chickens.
Because I'm broke and can't afford a flame weeder yet but I have to burn holes and cut my weed mat
I brought 2 long nozzeled flame lighters like the ones you use to light a gas bbq.
I'll use these to burn the plant holes using a template I cut out of a piece of scrap timber.
Weed mat unravels if it's not burnt/melted where it's been cut.
The flame lighters are a very cheap fix to the problem.
I paid 3 dollars for a pack of 2 of them from a cheap store similar to dollar tree.

I guess it all depends on where you live. If I planted outside before the end of April or the first of May I know I would lose plants. I lost some tomatoes last year because I got in a hurry and moved them from the shop to my hoop house in April. Temp dropped to the teens and killed everything.
The general rule for me is do not plant outside until after Mother's Day.
I have tomatoes sprouting in my shop now. I planted the seeds last Thursday and this morning I have green sprouts. I am using a heat mat and lights. The soil is around 78°with the heat mat.
 
According to the almanac I can plant my onion sets for the next month. With the rain we've just had I'll have to wait until next week to get the raised bed ready and I have a big window box I want to try to use to grow some of them.
If I was doing peas that could've been planted anytime this month

Other veggies I'll have to wait until the middle of april and for warm weather crops unless you're very diligent on protecting the garden you don't plant until at least Mother's Day here

I plan on getting a window boxes ready for radishes and spinach on monday

I don't think my trellis willl be tall enough but I figure something out before that time comes.
I can't bring myself to cull the spare seedling ineach cell esp. Considering how much the seed cost
so I'm planting both in the same hole and having one of the pair on one side of the trellis and the
other plant threaded through and growing on the other side.
 
Huge effort this morning.
Laid down paper within the string lines and filled the first 9 mtr garden bed with compost garden blend.
One down several more to go.
I have a rosella bush in exactly the wrong spot and I hate the thought of having to remove it
but I have to. It has started to flower which makes it even harder.
 
This morning hung the first row of reo garden trellis and the ran more string lines and laid down paper and junk mail
down the second row.
I then put three barrows of compost blend down and I was done for the day.

I'm never buying zucchini or cucumber seeds from The Seed Collection ever again.
Out of 30 zucchini seeds I had 8 germinate and 0 cucumber seeds germinate.
I'll now have buy starts from Bunnings next pension which annoys me like nothing else.

I've had better luck with Boondie Seeds but their delivery time is so slow.
 
I transplanted some tomato plants into larger pots today. Still have at least a month before they go out in the garden
I planted some celery plants in a window box. Not many just 4 to see how to grow them. I planted them in a mix of commercial garden soil,sand and manure

My onions I planted a couple of weeks back are up now and doing good so far. They're a mix of red,white and yellow. I have 3 rows in a big window box

Hubby made me some more containers to go with the first 4 he put together for me. They 're on skids in case they have to be moved for some reason. Yes they are empty shop vacs lol They're stainless and work great. I just need to fill them this year to get them started. I think they'll do well for pepper plants.He's also said that he plans on making me some more raised planters

He made me other raised containers from metal duct work that was removed from a commercial building the company was remodeling. They've worked great and don't bulge from the cold in winter since they're pretty heavy duty. I'm still working on building up the soil in them. I add composted manure to them every year and add calcium and such too. I want to add that they're equal to 4 squares in square foot gardening. I can squeeze in 2 tomato plants in them if I want but I prefer to just do one in each container

BackP we planted okra yesterday should have planted it last month . We have tomatoes,broccoli and peppers too and zuccini and squash.
But your garden is huge in comparison to ours. :great:
 
Planted peas in the garden and they have started to germinate. We have had rain almost every day for the last week so I'm sure that helped them. Going to plant the next row on Monday after we get back from fishing. I need to transplant some of my seedlings into bigger containers also. Some of my wife's flowers are to tall for the seed trays.
 
I'll have to get some pictures this weekend. My Peas, Garlic, Onions are all looking great. I harvested Radishes last week and planted some more. Horseradish looks Awesome. I planted Jerusalem Artichoke and it's got some nice leaves coming up and some Yacon as well that's coming up. Got three types of Tomatoes in the ground that are a good 8-10 inches tall and Green Peppers that are 6 inches or so tall. Am about to seed my big area with Amaranth, Quinoa, Sunflower and Sorghum. I'll get Watermelon, Squash and cucumbers planted this or next week and will start some other stuff I can't remember all, Orange Habanero is about to get put in the ground from under the lights. Bought a seeder I'm waiting to be here probably Monday..... So far it's been a very nice year.....

I'll try to do a quick video when I get to use it. I'll be doing over an acre and just thought this would make my life a lot easier. I was about what I would call mid price. $408.00 American.........But you do have to buy the different size rollers for different seeds. The 5 pack with just about every size you would ever use was $125.00 They shipped it for $ 17.00 so all in all not to bad......

Wife and i finished this bed for blueberries (6 plants) and started building 2 more beds today, should wrap them up tomorrow hopefully! Gonna plant one of our other beds soon but not quite yet! Eventually we will only grow in these type of beds, between the beds we are going to put rock to help keep the weeds at bay.

I have the seeder my Dad bought years ago. My garden is not big enough to make it worth the time to use so it has sat in the shed for over 15 years. Has all the seed inserts and it seems to work well just don't really have a need for it.
I wish someone that could use it was close enough to come and get it.
 
Finally got the last 9 mtr tomato row filled with compost blend and the trellis put up.

Tomorrow I'll start in on running string lines and putting down compost for the zucchini beds.

Brought some Tatura Dwarf tomato seeds which are an Australian heirloom variety that grows 60 to 70 cms
tall. It's a round slicer/ sauce type and from what I can gather it's very similar to Rutgers.
The Roma I'll be trialing next is a bush Roma called Roma VF. It's suppose to be very resistant
To wilt and blight.
My trellises aren't very tall so I'm looking at bush and dwarf varieties that have the disease
resistance I need but also the production seeings how I only have 18 mtrs of trellis to
work with.
