I can teach and watch the kids. But I can cook and shoot, too. And butcher. And raise animals. And do basic first aid.
If this is "How valuable are you in a post-apocalyptic world", I'd probably be busy pretty quick. Any machine that won't work ranging from a bulldozer, semi-truck, tractor, etc, down to a computer or floor-fan, I can make it work.
Taught a few things to this one young whippersnapper named Macgyver. I think he turned out ok:rolleyes:.

I am a 31 year paramedic and can shoot quite well. I would like to believe I can be quite valuable when the SHTF. It would be amazing to practice medicine without worrying about reimbursements, scope of practice and HIPPA. Meatball medicine at its finest!
God bless you for what you do and putting up with all of the crap they have thrown at you guys to deal with.

Everybody is an asset and also a liability. It all depends on the situation. I tend to think of people as assets until they prove otherwise then they will be gone.
I'm a country boy, I can survive. :)

A ditch doctor :) will be very valuable. A wilderness medic would be high on my list of people needed. I knew an MD that was also trained as a Wilderness medic. He said it was invaluable training.
I also knew a doctor that ran an ER in the largest hospital in town. He had to take a CPR course from an EMT because he needed the card for his business.

bartering post SHTF(goods or skills) is not part of my plans. self reliance is.
Good luck with that. You may be a very skilled and self reliant individual, but plan on a lessened or shortened life span too. Even the mountain men of the old west required other people for some things at some times and most had short life spans. Looking back at the farmers and settlers who open ended Canada up, they were very self reliant and independent but still needed others at times.

I intend to have a very simple and basic lifestyle post SHTF, one I have lived before so I know it is possible.
some people make their post collapse lifestyle too involved. keep it simple is my motto.
life in rural England will be different to rural Canada, in Devon we have a milder climate and an earlier and longer growing season than further north.

No doubt you can and will, but first attack of appendicitis or whatever and your self reliance will be shaky at best. We can hopefully all doctor and dentist to some degree but you will need a charmed life to totally avoid something that doesn’t require some level of outside help. I believe that many people can work towards a very independent lifestyle, but total self reliance is almost impossible. Even the Japanese soldiers who held out many years eked out a bare subsistence living but stole from others gardens etc. Still, I wish you luck if it comes to that.

in a SHTF situation the nurses and doctors will be the first to succumb to any disease or violence that caused the event as they are all on the front line, post SHTF don't expect any help from that quarter.
don't expect any dentist to be functioning either.
and if anyone wears glasses remember to keep your old glasses back and not throw them away.

Don't sell your self short.

-Can you effectively wield a firearm from a stationary postion?
-Can you reliably stay up all night if you sleep all day?
-Is either your vison or your hearing still at 80- 90%? (With hearing aid needed is also ok, since those batteries are cheap to stash)

If the answers are "yes" then you could fill a nightwatchman shift every night and in so doing free up a younger guy for patrolling or hard labor.

That's not even counting the fact that your age-related slower metabolism will lower your food consumption.

Shortage of boots on the ground to hold a retreat will likely be one of the biggest issues facing groups and a retreat that does not have someone awake at night will likely fall.

So if at all possible please stash some extras of your critical Meds.... having an extra pair of boots even if its just for a few months, even if its in a limited role as described above.. can make all the difference in the world whetheer a retreat makes it or not.

And I would be honored to have an older Gent in our group, who is willing to do what needs to be done, even if its not glamorous ...and I am sure most other retreats will feel the same way. :)
Yep

In a *total* collapse of society...

Within a few weeks, I will no longer be here, due to relying on maintenance meds for survival. There is nothing I can do to change that fact. Without basic pharmacy services, I'm done...

What I CAN do, is place my loved ones in a better position to succeed. Whatever that may be - defending, traveling, teaching, providing - that would be my goal.

I don't foresee a total, long term collapse of that magnitude happening. The powers that be will do what must be done to restore a semblance of order. Individual rights would be destroyed, but the sheep will follow their "shepherds". Unfortunately to survive in the long term, I would have to be among them. It's no way to live, but who knows what the future may hold...better days can and do come along...

ALL civilisations in the past have collapsed, so will this one, we are not immune but with all our reliance on computers we have further to fall.
it is said in my country we are 4 generations removed from the land, very few people seem to know where their food comes from (Duh!! the supermarket?) or even sometimes which animal( met someone a couple of years ago who couldn't tell the difference between a Calf and a Goat, and most people don't know apples grow on trees-I kid you not).

And this is why I do most things the old world ways.
Gardening, preserving, hunting, fishing, trapping, changing the oil in my car.
Having medical experience, I could sew you up with tiny neat stitches,
Waste not want not.
I can handle a rifle with very little problems.
Same with knife, bow.
Now I am teaching my grand daughter the same things, just as I taught my sons.
Just as my parents have taught me and my siblings.
