Threshing Wheat

Lots of hard work with little production. Someone, maybe Caribou suggested that growing potatoes in tough times would be a much better crop to grow.

It looked pretty efficient to me, so I did a little research and found that a man with a flail could thresh about 7 bushels (420 pounds) of wheat in one day. https://www.lhf.org/2015/07/grain-harvest-and-threshing-time/

The beauty of wheat is that it stores longer than anything else we can grow, and is a multipurpose food. When sprouted, the nutritional profile of wheat skyrockets. I love sprouted wheat tortillas!

And I LOVE those ladders! They look much more stable than the flimsy ones we use today. It certainly does not look like it will roll anywhere, not with their flat backs, plus the sheer weight of it apparently anchors it in place.

I am one of those "height challenged" people who need handrails for everything, though.

Thanks, Elkhound. Keep that good info coming!

theres ladders/stairs built similar in alaska on trails i have been on.built from much larger logs but same concept...i was stronger and more agile back then....it would take practice to get back into that again...lol...rolly polly i am...lol

i assume...you know the saying about that...the ladders in video have flat spots on backside to prevent rolling.

Me, too! I thought those ladders were really cool.

Yes, wheat will last for centuries, if properly stored. Like gardens and other aspects of life, diversification is important. Have a wheat field, a patch of corn, a patch of potatoes, and more. We never what is going to fail one year due to weather, storms, moisture, and disease.

If I was to make flour down here it would have to be with eggplants:dunno:they are only thing that grows like a weed. I dried some maybe see if they will grind up?
Someone I know was talking about a restaurant that serves eggplant fries. I am not a fan of eggplant, but I guess there is more to eggplant than eggplant parmesan. There are many things that can be ground into flour or powder. I think you have to use what you can.
