How did I save money today?

Today I started repairing some of the little annoying things around the house that I never seem to get around to. Like a trivet missing a rubber cap on a leg. It never sat level, annoying. For our neighbors down under… a trivet is what we call the thing we set a hot pot from the stove on. I have no idea if you use the same name.

In the hardware section of the big box store they have dozens of drawers of specialty items. I found an assortment pack of rubber caps for 96 cents, different sizes. I also bought a pack of self-stick felt pads for the bottom of appliances that don’t sit level, $2.

I don’t know if this really saved money but it does save a lot of annoyance… :D

The white rubber leg cap is new. I've had this and identical trivet for 30 years... Every so often I put a wire wheel on a drill and give them a good cleaning... looks like its due.

@Sewing, I believe they usually do when vegetables have a certain look. If you look at cauliflower, which I do frequently because I buy it, it often has light spots on it. It is not that the whole head is bad looking. I have also seen where darker spots have been cut off. I am really careful about food. Cutting off dark spots and mold on cheese doesn't mean there isn't mold in the food, even if we cannot see it. I do my best not to eat older food because of migraines.

Molds trigger my asthma, its a pain most of the time but did get me banned from jury duty at the old courthouse.

I saved $1 per pound on chicken. Only paid $1.29 lb. Amazing how food is going up in price
Also got soups for only .98 each ( ready to heat in case we come down with flu. its rampant here)
Bought ginger ale 4/$11
spaghetti sauce was down to $1 a jar so I stocked up on it
grape tomatoes were on BOGO so I bought some for a change in my cabbage salads
oh and 5lbs of russet potatoes for only .99

Dang Jim.....hope everything turns out all right.

Today was a very long day of shopping with many many stops. I've been planning this one for a week now.

Went to WM to see if they started their deals yet......it's not hot and heavy yet, but there are some good deals to be had.
Sunglasses $2 each (some of them reatailed for $10-$25) - I got a whole bag full to send to troops overseas.
Light and puffy windbreaker jackets - $5 (got one for me and one for Christmas gift)
Shirts $5 (gifts)
Cold weather grip gloves 2 pair/pk - $3 (I bought all they had of 6 sets - gifts and hubs)
throw rugs $7
zippered hoodies $5
nice winter gloves $5 (one for me and one gift)

At other stores....
10 pk heavy winter socks $10 (gifts)
supplements - BOGO free - stocked up
flannel shirts $6
mascara 4 pk set $6
luggage set $140 for the matching pair of nice quality hard shell regular and carry on suitcases (plus a $20 gift card for future purchase)
wratchet straps 4 pk - $9 (gift)
Ajax dish soap - .51

And lots of clearanced goodies (90% off) which I'll probably give away b/c I don't like spicy stuff and I'll also send some to the troops
jalapeno nacho slices .32/11 oz jar
diced jalapenos - .17/4 oz can
hot sauce - .33/5 oz bottle
hot habanero green sauce - .40/5 oz bottle

The best deals that I found today I really had to look for. Some of them I just stumbled onto, which is always nice. I stocked up on a lot of regular use stuff that never goes on sale so that I don't have to go back into town for a long time if I don't have to. I figured I saved a lot on gas today with all the stops I made and then I filled the tank before I came home. My frig and freezers are full, as is my gas tank. It's gonna take me a while tomorrow to clean up and cut all the veges and re-arrange the frig and put everything away.

Got to day 11 of not spending any money but busted yesterday.

We bought all the pipework and fittings for running our rain water to the creek at the back wiping out half of our home cash emergency kitty. I put in an order on the internet for groceries using a $15 off promotion, a further 5% off using our gift card and specials I saved $28.70 in usual prices. We are now topped up again and further on food in case we seriously do need to build an ark .

With saving so much last month and doing pretty well so far this month, I am splitting what we saved between our savings and paying extra on the car. We don't like car payments so paid about 1/4 down and financed the remainder. We don't use much credit so this helps our credit score. We got a 3 year loan 13 months ago, and I'm hoping to pay it off byApril. We do need to continue working on savings too though as it took a couple hits in the past 3 months. Seems like I would just add to it and something would happen. I guess that's why it's there.

Will be saving $40 a month starting in March.
Turning off the the internet.
Savings account took a big hit this winter, so cutting out all non essentials items.
Cutting back on grocery shopping it will be $20 for fresh item every two weeks at least till I get garden planted.
I can go to library and use their wifi.
Cell phone plan will be cut back on too.
Saving for deposit on new apartment.

You are moving again, Mo?
I love finding bargains like that, Angie. Just need to stop. With moving, all of it is added weight.

I moved around a lot in my younger years. Now, I'm rooted! The thought of moving again is just foreign to me now. I hope your move goes as smoothly as possible. It seemed like every time I moved, I always lost stuff. Grrrrrr!

Have slways planned on moving into this 55 and plus community.
Especially after my car was vandalized after moving into neighborhood, I now live in.
I wasn't here a week when someone put 5 inch screw in my rear passenger tire.
If I can get the deposit saved up by June.
Will move, if not will stay where I am.
I live in 1 bedroom apartment now.
No modern conviences like dishwasher, garage, single pane windows, drafty my own yard for grand daughter and Strawberry.
New apartment is 2 bedroom, garage, front and back doors, my own yard, updated apartment(only 2-3 years old) all handicap ready.
Patrolled nightly for good reasons, not bad for the same amount of money.
Near a fishing place, park for me and Strawberry to walk to daily weather permitting.
Here Strawberry and I don't go outside after 7 pm for anything.
But in fairness this apartment is better than the last.

I moved alot in my younger days also.
It was called Army reassignment (ETS.)
Later it was called deployment.
Still in the Army.
Now it's because I want to be safe.
I want my grand daughter to grow up without a lot of fear.
I want my grand daughter, Strawberry and myself safe.

Looks like we will be saving about $650 on internet this year. I called to find out when our 2 yr. contract expired. We were tossing around the idea of disconnecting it at the house. When they said I had another year, I told them that wasn't accurate. They said when we moved WE renewed our contract. I knew this was a lie because the reason we were still with them at that point was because we had upgraded a year prior and were forced to accept a 2 year then. After almost 2 hrs. on the phone, a "supervisory specialist" or some such title found where "agent Michael" had noted that they would move the service with a 12 mo. contract. Our agreement actually expired last month, but they were trying to tell me I was obligated until upcoming Dec. I was so mad I told them to cancel services. We are paid up until 3-13 then will be done at the house. I did tell the gal who finally admitted it, that I didn't originally call to cancel, but after the run around, I was done with them. There are too many other options than to deal with crooks.

Day 2 of not spending any money today and broke on Monday when we had to buy a fuel gift card to fill up 6 jerry cans with.

We saved $16.98 on our fuel with combining our gift card 5% off, searching for the cheapest fuel on the internet and using our 4c per litre off rewards card for buying groceries we usually buy.

Sounds like a far better deal @MoBookworm1957 to get a 2 bedroom apartment with security as well for the same price.

So far this month as we are undertaking a low spend challenge for February we have saved $680.81 and I think I can eek out a few more savings yet for the month. I have replaced most of the expenditure to buy the pipework for yard flood mitigation and added more to our 3 month living expenses emergency fund too.
