@angie_nrs ,
He is not an inside dog at all.
So no he hasn't been in my recliner .
But,
He likes to lay across my lap when we take breaks and just rest in the golf cart.
I been looking for just the right dog for me to have a companion here on the farm, for about a year or longer,.
A friend of mine works volunteer at PAWS , here in town, so she called me and told me about Doogan.
We seen videos and pics of him last week, went and visited him last Thursday, went back last Friday and got him.
So today was day 5.
Tremendous progress in short time...credit to him.
He's so quick to learn and just a loving dog.
Only had one bad habit...he would jump up on everybody...I stopped that in 2 days.
He minds really good.

He is becoming my outside 100% partner.
He stays within 25 ft of me .

Jim

"He also has a hound lazy streak .
He likes to lay in the shade and watch me work."

How perfect of a hound dog can you get then?? He knows he's home.

Looking that way.
I knew exactly what I wanted in a companion dog.
I do believe he will be that dog . He has to grow out of some puppy play stuff, and learn a few things...which he will. I have had dogs that were too high bred for specific purpose and couldn't be taught anything else.
That's not him...he is so very teachable.

Yes when he wants to rest, or grab a bite of food he just goes back to his home.
And

He has definitely accepted this place as his home.

No digging holes anywhere yet.

I will not leave him run loose without me outside for probably a month.

Jim

Yes his paws are huge.
About the size of my hand when we high five.

I do think he will fill out and bulk up some more.

Just guessing , but he weighs around 70 lb,
I had to put him in and take him out of the travel kennel in my truck ,
He is heavy.

Yeah looking like he is a keeper.

I'm having fun with him .

Jim that Doogan was a good ove,he seems to give you joy already.

Oh yes, now that you mention that 'digging holes' thing, I remember you inquiring about dog breeds a while ago. That's great that you had an inside scoop at PAWS.

I used to have outside hunting dogs when I was a kid. Neither me, nor hubs could do that now. We are too soft and our weather can be pretty harsh. Plus, hubs likes to snooze in the recliner with a dog in his lap.....and drink his morning coffee with a dog in his lap. He also likes to be greeted when he comes home by excited pups. He's a big ole' softy. Heck, he'd let them sleep in our bed if I'd let that happen. Nope, they've got their own beds. Besides, they snore.;)

I've always said my idea of heaven was to be surrounded with a bunch of puppies. It's just pure joy. When my day comes, I hope to be able to see all those pups that have added so much happiness to my life over the years.

It looks like you found yourself a good fit and a good buddy. I'm so happy for you both!

All I really wanted was an outside buddy, loyal companion, partner to talk to , swap stories with , laugh together while I'm out working , fishing , gardening, hunting xx or just sitting in the shade drinking tea.

Ya know what I mean?

Looking like he may fit the bill.

Jim

I look forward to these updates. Doogan is a beautiful dog and I'm happy to see him doing so well.
My dogs are indoor dogs because they fit through the cat door- but they are house trained, don't chew stuff, & like to sit on laps and sleep in human beds.

Sixth day,

Ok , today he was anxious to go run and play.
I might add that he is eating much better, as he is settling in. First 3-4 days he was eating much...now he is.

So we practiced come command... perfect every time , no matter what he's doing. Treat of course.
Except once in a while no treat.
Practiced sit command after come command.
I had to help him a little first 2-3 times..
I can't believe he performed it , no help. Slow and steady. He is quick to learn.

So then we went hunting , investigating, running, riding.

He has not been to the house yet. We have 2 outside cats there. Eventually I'll introduce them.
He had to help me cut saplings on the pond Levy, locust and sweet gum.

Sooner the better ,lol.

@Meerkat ,
I'm not concerned that he won't like the cats, he will.

But they are my mousers, and I don't need them to get scared off. One if them is ultra pregnant .

Jim

Just saying before Doogan gets any more territorial. I let thedog that was with our Alice who passed come into our yeard so she won't be lonely and she has tried to take over. So I hadto let her know that her sister who was not in back yard with them was also welcome . They get spoiled fast. But you know all that .

Seventh day,

Not much today , due to rain most of day.

Went running earlier between rains,
Practiced commands some.

He is getting better.
Introduced him to my wife, first time he has had contact with her.
He acted very nervous for a couple minutes , until she petted him...then he was her friend.

Started raining so back to shelter.

He is very busy and nosey, had to check out the shed where I keep the golf cart.

I had to go to Walmart to get him a 50 lbs bag of dog food.
My first visit to WM in over 6 weeks.

I HATE THAT PLACE.
Another story

Jim

He is getting familiar with the place he is going to protect.
That's why I'm not exposing him to the entire place just yet.
Each week I will expand his territory.

I been taking him to the same areas for 7 days , and he is not as actively investigating there anymore.
Each time I take him a little farther he gets a boost. New smells.

Jim

Eigth day,

We went out running and hunting.

Then he helped me cut up and move a giant downed tree. When he wasn't playing in the creek. I'm gaining confidence in him that he won't stray very far away from me.

Then we went over to my dirt pit. Been taking dirt from this hillside for 20 years.
IMG_20200424_172336048_HDR.jpg

Then on our way back up to the house...we checked out the shooting range.

He comes instantly to me on come command and sits instantly on sit command.

He seems to have made this his home.

Jim

Good looking dog.

Thanks @MoBookworm1957 , I think he's handsome for a hound dog.

Nose to the ground. Do you know if he is gun shy? or thunder shy?
Our dog doesn't approve of guns. She also doesn't like fireworks. Thunderstorms are okay.

@Patchouli
I don't know yet.
I thought about that today while we were on the gun range, I'll see how he reacts to .22 .
He is frightened by the diesel engine of the tractor, and the chainsaw. Don't know about thunder.
He will get better.

Looks like Doogan is making himself at home. Glad you found him.

@Bacpacker
Yes he is.
He is learning where he can and can not go.
He is very energetic, and busy with nose to the ground always.
He almost gets run over by golf cart because he can be running along , always right in front of cart, nose down, hit on a scent and do a dead stop. I really gotta be on my toes.:)
