I've had my eyes on a practical defense firearm, but the prices have jumped a bit. And, I'd hate to drop a bunch of cash on a gun, and then lose my job. On the other hand, firearms will likely hold their value for the near future. And, the availability of firearms is decreasing (which should concern us all).
Wife told me the local gun store called and said they had something for me. She didn't even bother to ask what I got...which means she has no problem with whatever it is. I'm sure she remembers what I was looking at.

And, when you buy a gun, you get to buy rationed ammo (e.g., 9mm). :woo hoo:

Went by to pick it up. Put 150 rounds through it...but it jammed about 30 times (bullet chambered successfully, but wouldn't fire). They took a look at it, and found a problem with the trigger mechanism. I left it with them. Hopefully it is an easy fix, but they said they would get me a new one if it wasn't. So far they are doing all the right things to fix a bad situation. Just sucks not to come home with my new toy.

I knew a couple of people new to firearms who bought their first pistol (typically a 9mm autoloader recommended by a friend), put it up on a shelf or in the basement for a couple of years -- and couldn't understand why the cartridges were green and it wouldn't chamber. The best thing to do with a new gun is to shoot it a lot like you did to find out if there're any problems.

You'd think anyone would know that without being told....

Okay, I am feeling a little down, the stuff I have read indicates that we may get Joe shoved on us. Now I remember hearing my wife complain for 8 years of O-boo-boo, but the thought of a Barnie Fife in the White House and a Fancy Nancy/AOC driving Congress is just too depressing. I am praying for a miracle as that is what this country needs right now. O-boo-boo had a trillion dollars at his disposal for “shovel ready” jobs and 8 years later the country was still stuck in the mire. 3 year of Trump and the economy was bouncing back even with all the distractions, if it wasn’t for the China Flu things would be great and we would be on top of the world…. I am trying to envision how one can endure 4 years of lockdown and blundering, any suggestions?

@Amish Heart I was in WM today and there were maybe 5 vegetable broth container, a few beef, I was looking for chicken broth. All sold out? Yes, at that spot on the shelf. But there was lots more in one of those stands where they put seasonal foods. The clerk said because it got so cold, everybody was making soup. Must have been every household.

I always look for salt free beef, chicken, and veg broth to cook with. Husband is supposed to limit salt. I found a few salt free beef, and was surprised. I only have about a dz in the pantry, and would like a few more dozen of each. Am taking my favorite cousin and her daughter shopping tomorrow to Walmart and Aldi for all of us to top off, so I'll see what they have. And then to Sams with them on Friday for the bigger stuff. Well, husband is our driver, so we'll make sure we get lunch, too. Walmart has been stocking some of the Hunts brand salt free tomato sauce. I'll see if they have any. And maybe a ham to put in the freezer for Christmas or a large family meal. Already bought a turkey.

I got my new glasses and hearing aid last month.

Oddly enough I just went to the eye doctor this week, and my glasses are good for another year. Self and family were never in question, especially family. That is 99% of the reason I prep.

A conversation I overheard today about so many trucks (tractor trailers) being out on the highways, interstate, etc. Why, they wanted to know. End of month orders to be filled they think. I was really surprised they didn't know any better.

I'm thinking: The truckers and associated companies, logistics, deliveries, they all know there is a big possibility of mishap and mayhem to occur in the next coming week, two weeks, month. Plus Thanksgiving. Plus Christmas. THINK PEOPLE, THINK!

Let me guess...
These are the same people that panic and wipe the shelves empty of TP, Lysol, meats, etc. , whine non-stop about shortages, and they wonder why trucks are covering the road bringing them more stuff?
Idiots.

Huggies baby wipes!!! At least you can keep yourself clean. ;) I use them a lot when working outside. They're about $13 for a package of 700 wipes.
Haven't seen any of the big packs/boxes in months. All the wipes around here are the small diaper bag sizes.

So it would seem, but I don't know that for sure, mmm, yes, most likely.

The wife's last trip to Costco the, unmasked, woman behind her in line got up in her face and remarked that she should come to Costco more often so she didn't have to buy so much. Wife told her to back off.

I expect that woman has little to fall back on.

Weedy, that woman talks about them having plenty of X or Y and all the boxes have been moved to the front of the shelf. Bare shelves and product one or two items deep is not good. How long has it been like this that she thinks things are okay. Even the things, like oatmeal, where there was an adequate amount have bare spots you could drive a truck through.

Our store shelves have been stocked like that for months now. Both of our local grocery stores have stopped taking coupons as well. No reason for it, they said the main office said no more for now.

We have not stocked up food or many supplies because if the shtf thise who don't have food and supplies will take it fom those who do.
We tried to just buy enough to last for few months. And then plant crops and have a few chickens. This way we didn't store up a lot of food for those who will kill us to enjoy afterwards. I don't trust my nieghbors much more than I do strangers. But most of them do store food too but not near enough to survive a long time if stores vlose.
If we had more numbers of friends, family or allies it would be diffferent.

One truck load is all I plan on being able to get before I say so long to my apartment in the city. If this brews for a few days I may make another trip but either way I can't bring a whole lot so my supplies are not massive.
This winter is suppose to be extra cold and lots of snow. So I need to keep warm. Poor circulation in cold weather and a lazy thyroid are going to be my biggest threats besides 2 legged animals.
Some close family think my planning is nonsense so I don't speak about it much but if this isn't nonsense I worry about them getting to safety. Gods in control though worse case scenario I guess freezing to death isn't the worse way to go. ;)

The news last night said that there was a second run on TP and stuff as people stock up get ready for another round of IT.... what ever IT is...
We are actually in a coast mode, just buying enough to get by and trying to eat down the freezer a bit.

I wonder how the stores are doing with sales of Halloween treats and stuff?
We are making some popcorn balls for some of our friends kids, but handouts for the door to door stuff is out this year....

As the election gets closer I am picking up a WTH attitude.... like no matter who wins everybody loses...

I used my first Dutch Oven (a 6-quart Lodge; a "camp stove" with the three legs and a rimmed lid) back in the early '90's when I was a scoutmaster. I bought the same model with a week and fell in love with it and the entire idea. Just about anything you can cook in the oven or on a stovetop (including breads and pastries) can be cooked on a DO, especially if you can find a Volcano stove to go with it.

We're talking abouit $300 here just for the two items, but you will have a versatile kitchen at your disposal which can use wood, charcoal, or standard 20-lb propane tanks and will probably be used by your grandchildren, when and if. Last month, I picked up two 2-packs of Kingsford charcoal (80 lb total) for $39.76 plus tax at my local Home Depot. With proper cooking, that will provide cooking for Dawn and me for at least six months if the electrical power goes away.

I can't recommend this setup too highly. If you get just one thing, go for the camp stove (make sure it has the three legs and the rimmed top for the charcoal briquettes) and as many bags of charcoal briquettes you can snarf up. The only caveat is NOT TO USE IT IN THE HOME because charcoal emits a lot of carbon monoxide, and you may end up well-fed, warm, and dead.

Cast iron, Volcano stoves, and bags of charcoal are heavy. These are not going to be in your bug-out bag; they should be on the kitchen porch of your homestead or the balcony of your condo apartment, etc. But it's the most simple and versatile way I can think of to cook any meal you want. You can learn more about DO cooking here.

Duncan: I have a Dutch oven, but admittedly, never used it. I have watched videos on line, and I feel comfortable with the process. It seems that in everything I watch the people doing the cooking know the temperature they are using. How do you know the temperature? How do you know how many coals should be underneath, and how many should be on top? I really would like to learn how to use it properly.

Thanks for sharing.

Us too.
Though we have a gas range with 2+ years of propane on hand along with a Sun Oven which I will use today again just because I like it so much. We do also have our RV with extra of the small propane tanks for that too. If things go bad I plan on being able to eat. :)

Well this isn't necessarily an internet conspiracy theory anymore. I was actually quite surprised today when I turned on talk radio and they were discussing this topic. He was reading articles and sharing rumors that he's heard. Yeah, I know, it's not exactly evidence, but it's the first time I've heard someone talking about it on the radio. He spoke of antifa members that have already presumably checked into fairly local hotels. Thankfully there's really not anything of consequence to loot or destroy in our area, but there are some within 40 miles. There was also mention that antifa are going to target Trump supporters, which is another reason I am a non-advertising Trump supporter. Apparently there will be more patrols on the road after the election to try and quell any unrest. Good! I won't know b/c I'll be at home.

There was a reference to this site, that I'd never heard of before. Although, I'd take it with a grain of salt since they might be fear mongering just to sell prepper products or get clicks.
TOTAL WAR is coming to America after Biden is DEFEATED on Nov. 3rd; prepare for every worst case scenario you've ever imagined

If nothing else, the radio, TV, and net are all predicting some type of panic over the election. So, expect packed stores over the weekend. I'm sure I'm not the only one who heard the broadcast. I'm glad I went and topped off supplies and fuel already. Geesh! I can't wait til this is all over! Regardless, I'll be sipping a cocktail and crunching popcorn on Tuesday night. Until then, I have some organizing to do. It's going to be a busy weekend. Hopefully next week will not be as rough of a ride as many are expecting. If so, I'll be ready.....but I hope it isn't necessary. Still.......

I was just in my local Walmart today. There is no run on anything here. The store looks better stocked with everything - TP and paper towels included - than it has in months. I grabbed some garbage bags, paper towels, and dish soap. Soap is something I'm a little concerned about - I don't know how to make it. But I've got 4 bottles of dish soap and 4, 64oz bottles of liquid hand soap on hand so I feel pretty good about it for the next few months...

I was wondering about how long it will take to settle the election and discovered that the Electors are not scheduled to vote until a date which is set by law. So on December 14, 2020: Electors Vote in Their States Monday after the second Wednesday in December of presidential election years is set (3 U.S.C. §7) as the date on which the electors meet and vote. In 2020, the meeting is on December 14. So we could have people raising a fuss for 6 weeks after the general election. Just wanted to give everyone something to look forward too. ;)
