MY GAWD I discovered the joys of a KS this past Thursday !!!! Had a mid right side back pain Wednesday morning it hurt some but disappeared and I still went to work, Thursday morning the pain was so bad I had to go to the ER by transport. CT scan showed an over 5mm stone lodged in the upper tube. The Dr said that I had a 50% chance of just passing it. Friday morning I was back in the DR in such pain as I have never known to exist . They could not find the stone with an xray so the Doc said just go home with pain meds.......My comment...HELL NO this thing is commin out!! the pain was so bad even the highly regulated Oxy pain killers would not effect the pain!!!!! In surgery Fri home Fri afternoon with stints and less pain.
I thought I was tough I have known others that have had them but I had no eyedeer that it could be that bad.

Over the years I've passed a fair amount of stones, one was about 5/16" across, I called it a roto-rooter, what I found out was that the calcium binder that's in certain vitamins can cause stones to form, other times it may be uric acid, thing is that since we started on a blood type diet, the stone problem went away, I haven't had a stone in many years, thank God! Oh, another thing I found in researching about stones was the carbonation of soft drinks as well as phosphoric acid that's in colas, that same acid that will dissolve the calcium off of a chicken bone, I remember that experiment from biology class, the chicken leg bone could be tied in a knot after being soaked in a Coke.

When hubby had them he turned grey from pain, second time he had them had to have triptoplasty 'spell' to bust them up enough to pass. They whole trailer they had that machine in was actually shaking back and forth. They had it outside hospital next to rear entrance, hope you get rid of them without any trouble,
I guess they use sound waves to break em up,don't know but it was LOUD.

Been diagnosed three times with stones. I believe them to be caused by uric acid in my case. When I feel the stones acting up, or my gout, I eat something with cherries in it. I always keep dried cherries available for that need and it works well for me. In season I eat fresh cherries.

Oh yeah, been there done that. I was on Flomax waiting to pass one. Flomax dilates your plumbing and messes with your vision. Funny story I was at the urinal and trying to read the papers on the wall. I stepped back just slightly as I squinted I realized I was peeing on my foot. The pressure was almost non existent so it didn't make it to the urinal. The guy next to me thought it was hilarious. 😲

Car hubby has to watch tea,Spinesh and chocolate but he drinks about 4 oe 6 cups of coffee a day.He swears by the coffee but he has the most common kind of stones.

The procedure is called lithotripsy. I helped install one of the first in the Seattle area. They used to put the patient in a stainless steel tub full of water and use shockwaves to break the stone into tiny parts. When we first tested it we used a chunk of concrete in a plastic bag and it separated the cement from the sand.
Now it's done with a small probe inserted up the urethra. Not fun but a lot easier than the old days in the 80s.

I had 4 stones at the same time. 3 in the tubes and 1 in the kidney. So painful when they moved! This was in the early 90's. Had lithotripsy 4 times in about a month and a half. Mine were calcium oxalate. I have passed 5 since then, the longest was 7 centimeters and took almost a year to pass. Haven't had any in the past several years. Yay! I stay away from caffeine, soda, spinach, dark beer, rhubarb. I take magnesium citrate and B-6 to keep the oxalate from binding to calcium. It helped me to have one analyzed so I knew what to avoid.

They used a newer procedure on me, they broke up the stone with a laser.
Mine was a tad over 5mm in dia after two days in such crippling pain it had only moved 1\2 inch, that info plus my added Hell no that sucker is commin out were the reasons the Dr decided to go ahead an pulverise it. The job of passing the grains is no easy feat

Juicy juice 100% pure unsweetened cherry juice. Hubby has had gout, minor diet change and cherry juice works. Also good for the UT and many other things!

I really butchered that word, huh? Thanks for correction.

Snap they told hubby it wasn't the caffeine for his kind of stones it was the tanic acid in tea. He has been a coffee fein since he had the last stones, but then his may have been different. Glad you found the problem. Those are not fun.

@ssonb I'm sorry you're having such miserable kidney stones. I hope everything goes well & you are out of pain soon.

My dad had a large one (I think 5mm) but we were overseas at the time. They were supposed to break it up with some sort of machine that did sonic waves or something but one of the lab techs dropped the machine & broke it so they had to wait for a new one to come in and it had moved behind a bone so they couldn't use it. Jerkface doctor decided to put a stent in *without anesthetic* and it was making my dad bleed. He had a very high tolerance for pain but he was miserable and had to go to the ER from it. (It's a good thing I never met the doctor who put in the stent w/o anesthetic bc I would have punched him).

I get them frequently but they are small. Not sure if I have a high threshold for pain or if my nerves are dulled or both. Or maybe I'm just lucky that mine aren't huge or something. They are miserable but never been bad enough to go to the hospital over (*knocks on wood*). I wouldn't be able to get treatment anyway since I don't have insurance. Passing them sucks, although it's only made me bleed a couple of times. Not sure what causes mine, but I used to drink a lot of tea and my thyroid meds apparently contribute to the production of them. Been trying to drink more citrus but apparently not enough. My right kidney seems to think it's a stone factory. I have them at least once or twice a month. Sometimes more. I've just grown used to living with them.

I think I scared some people in the Walmart bathroom when I was passing one last week.

You said centimeters. Hope you meant millimeters. 7cm is 2.75" long and would most likely be impossible to pass.

I have a rare kidney disease called Cystinuria. Cystinuria | Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center (GARD) – an NCATS Program

That gives you chronic stones. I've had about 4,000 in my life.

I had my first stone at age 6. At that time, Cystinuria wasn't a known disease and the doctors had no clue what to do. They gave me this god-awful medicine which didn't do anything. I just passed the stones and moved on. They came in spurts where I'd have them daily for a few years then nothing for a few years.

In my early 20's, I got a monster (pic below). At right around 17mm, it was going to be a bitch to pass it. Lithotripsy didn't really exist at the time. Doc gave me some meds, sent me home and said "You have 30 days to pass it or we have to go in after it to avoid kidney damage)". Well, I was able to pass it.

Never had them, I heard it a lot like having a baby in a pickup truck, on a bumpy road in the dark, in the wind, in the rain on a cold winter's night

My wife went through the same ordeal a couple of months ago. Pain was unbelievable, and we ended up in the ER. Medication worked for her, and they passed without further incident. No fun to say the least.

I've only passed one... I worked at it as I could feel every inch it traveled. The pain wasn't as bad as a migraine for me and it didn't last as long either. It was nice when it passed but not life threatening.

I've passed probably 20 of them over the years. Some have caused bleeding but that is not often. Got one kicking around right now. I joked with my mom saying "tell the kidney stone to stop it" and she said "Stop it, kidney stone, or I'll punch you in the kidney!" LOL.

My FIL had one, doc said milk may have caused it. My whole life I knew the man, he never used dairy, MIL made corn bread with water not milk.
My DW made a low cal cheese cake & he eat a tiny little pice & now 20 years after his pasting It is still hard to believe he tasted something with dairy in it.

There are a number of things that can cause them. I was told that tea contributes to them. Especially for people on hypothyroid meds. I started getting them after I got hypothyroid. I always drank tea before. Had to cut back. Didn't drink any for several months. Still getting them with only water as my drink. Probably need to drink more citrus. I wonder if the citrus in the citrus green tea will cancel out the tea...

zannej, Think about unsweetened cranberry juice. It remains acidic as it goes through your body. That might tend to dissolve the little buggers.

I will have to see if I can get one of those strainer things they have to catch the stones and see if I can get something analyzed. But I will also try the cranberry juice. Maybe mixed with something so it doesn't taste so bad. LOL.

Yeah, unsweetened cranberry juice is an acquired taste. :)

Got stones in both kidneys now. Left one for a change and it's hurting more than the right one. Couldn't sleep comfortably last night between the bad shoulder on the right and the stones. If I slept on my right my shoulder hurt too much for me to sleep. If I slept on my left my kidney/back hurt. If I slept on my back then both kidneys hurt. I was too sore to move too much. Currently in bed sitting up using kitties as heating pads. I sang Celtic songs to get Sir Hammington to come cuddle with me.

Several plants will dissolve kidney stones. The three most commonly known are Chanca Piedra, Hydranga and Joe Pye Weed. All three are available for purchase in tincture form on the internet. I know nothing about Chanca Piedra but it's reputation. Joe Pye weed and Hydranga both have a long history in Appalachian folk medicine. They treat a great many issues effectively. And of course, great at dissolving kidney stones.

The guy who came to set up my new stove last year was facing surgery to have a large kidney stone removed. I told him about Hydranga and where to get tincture locally. 3 days later he passed the stone naturally.

I suggest finding a local herbalist who could give you the best advice for you situation, other meds you may be taking etc.

I posted about both plants here…

You would think that phosphoric acid, with it's dissolving characteristics, would remove the stones if we just wolfed down a few six-packs of our favorite soda. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.

Haven't really been a soda drinker for several years now. We have the occasional Zevia but that's not a regular thing. I do coffee and I do lemon water, probably 99% of what I drink... coffee and water for breakfast, otherwise, mostly lemon water.

My one and only stone, I drank lots and lots of lemon juice concentrate as well as apple cider vinegar. It was uncomfortable but not unbearable. Passed in about two days, I think. Saw a bit o' "gravel" in the toilet after I peed. Hope not to be repeating that one...
