Am I the only who one who has zero interest in watching them? I know many people are all about them, but something is missing for me. Put it in with professional sports. Zero interest.

The Olympics are on ?
I usually like to . . . . buuuut . . . . I haven't had TV for ages, but would typically pull up the updates in the evening to see who did what. This is the first I've read about the olympics this year 
I like watching the youngsters, they put in years of work just to get there. They aren't a part of all the bs that goes with it, the politics or the PC tv announcers or bs commercials...
I hold my nose to the bs and watch the kids compete. Some of it is actually interesting. I watched the skeet shooting and archery competitions today. Yesterday the airrifle competition was cool. Some of the swimming and diving are cool also. Some of the track events are interesting.
Other events leave me scratching my head... like "water polo"... Why do they have something so un-relatable to the real world.
Just while typing this I watched a 17yrold girl from Alaska win the Gold Medal in 100m breast stroke swimming. GO USA!

I don't watch television, but did see a story in print about the Norwegian girls being fined for not wearing bikinis. Well, wearing bikinis might add to the interest of some to watch them, but like beauty pageants, can we move on from such b.s.? Is it the sport or the need for women to be scantily clad? 
I'd bet there are some interesting stories about some of the athletes. I do remember that there are countries that have never won any medals.
I have no interest in watching. I have given up on ALL sports.
In the past, NASCAR was almost a religion at my house. I knew all the drivers, their car number, their owner, and their sponsers.
Today I couldn't tell you any of that.

I used to watch the winter games. Love cross country and downhill skiing, biathlon,. But when the huge queen push got in full swing that was enough for me.
The only reason I am not watching is because I don't own a tv anymore. I know there is so much politics involved, and let's not get into the slow death of woman's sport. But for most of those athletes this is the pinnacle of their years and years and years of dedication.
I absolutely loved the figure skating. But shooting, archery, taekwondo, equestrian and quite a few others too.
Maybe it helps that I grew up in a smaller country, less people and competitors means it's easier to dream that you yourself could get there. You also actually know athletes. Not this year's of course, but I remember an Olympics where the opening ceremony I could watch the Zimbabwe team and go "ooh I played tennis against her once, Ohh that girl was in my sisters class, that guy is a jerk" it puts a human and personal face on the games.
Why let politics ruin the appreciation of what these amazing men and woman can do, and a bit of patriotic pride in what the people of ones country can do. Besides for me it's always fun when Zim, SA and Canada end up in the same competition lol.

They lost me when they brought politics into the Olympics. Disrespecting the Country that trained and financed their appearance there. I feel bad for the actual athletes who trained hard and deserve to be there. The disrespectful ingrates should be kicked, right there on the spot an their backups brought in. For allowing them to continue with their spectacle, they deserve to lose every event.
Bring back actual non-political competition!
I used to be a big NASCAR fan also. Knew drivers, sponsors, teams, who drove for whom… They went woke, I left and so did many I know. I could not even tell you what drivers there are left this year, or last.

Do you ever wonder how sports became such a thing? I do. How did they become so important to colleges? How did cities come to build the expensive stadiums, sports arena's etc., yet be financially strapped for infrastructure maintenance? We know something is rotten but can this ever be figured out?

Yes, when Rome burned in 64 AD, Nero was up on one of the hills watching it happen, and likely was the one who had it happen. When that part of Rome burnt, it was right where he wanted his next palace to be built. Then he blamed the Christians and began rounding them up and torturing them in various ways.

You have to be physically AND mentally fit to compete. It's crazy tough now a days. Walk away if you can't do it, it will be bad in so many ways if you don't. You are still a quitter at the end of it all. You will be remembered for that first and your great accomplishments second!!!

I understand that. For me, it was baseball being on the television and we children at our dinner table having to be quiet so the baseball game could be heard by one adult man. Oh no, not in my world. That did it for me as a very young child. Things like that formed my opinion at a very young age. I prefer pleasant conversation at the dinner table, interacting with loved ones. But this was part of a bigger picture of family dysfunction.

Even I remembered Biles being a superstar years back. She has 30 metals.
She (@24) has also been doing gymnastics for 10 years.
There are no 30-year-old gymnasts for a really good reason.
I had to dig all the way thru Wikipedia to figure out why she dropped out. (she had to)
She is sold out to so many companies, with lucrative contracts, that she could not lose.
Her body has basically told her that she is not a teenager anymore☹.
The next event was on the uneven bars and then tumbling, both are dangerous the way they do it, all sort of flips, twists etc. She preformed very badly on an event then basically called it quits. Sounded like she had a panic attack but who knows the real reason.
I wonder what the Vegas odds are of something like this happening? The team was supposed to bring home all sorts of gold then Poof! Lots of money changing hands tonight!

The wife turns the TV on to the Olympics as background when she gets home from work. We don't sit there and watch it, but occasionally glance at it as we walk past the TV doing other stuff. Mostly it seems to be swimming at the time of day the TV gets turned on. Right up there with watching golf if you ask me. Not terribly exciting. If it wasn't the Olympics, it would probably be American Ninja Warrior. Which is a heck of a lot more entertaining if you ask me. What I like about it is everybody is rooting for everybody else. It's a competition, but all the participants seem to be friends and genuinely cheer each other on. You never see anyone mad or upset if someone else does better than they do. About the friendliest competition I have ever seen.
I'm right with you Weedy. My interest was marginal at best, and when they start to politicize it I turn it off in a heartbeat. I know I am throwing the baby out with the bath water. There are a lot of great kids who are there representing their country, and do appreciate it, but do they ever show that?
That wouldn't fit the medias' narrative on what a terrible country this is. I have no interest.
The gymnast who walked off yesterday is black. She was a great gymnast! Enough said bur not for our press... she was their darling because she was black. Their coverage of her was galling to the point of being patronizing.
I'm glad she walked off if for nothing else it left our press speechless. They switched from their normal stories to little comments about metal health. It was funny watching them trying to figure out how to spin the story.
I feel sure they will (next day or so) come up with a spin of how it was racist white america's fault she had a break down etc...
