Curious if anyone here invests in any crypto.
SHIBA INU has been staying in the negatives for most of the day.

Nope, I don't invest, but I do mine litecoin. Every so often I buy precious metals with crypto.

Nope. As soon as the govt gets tired of people dodging income tax with it, they will regulate it and it will become just as imaginary as it always was.
Right now it's like the old game of 'musical chairs' and the music is still playing.
The only difference is, when the music stops, there will be no chairs.

You never know. Bitcoin was $0.33 back in 2009 and now it’s worth over $55,000. We still have time to see future growth.

...As well as an inevitable catastrophic plunge.

I am still waiting for pet rocks and mood rings to come back.

Crypto is just bit off the interweb somewhere for me. Not putting my money in that.

Ben
You wanna buy some very expensive, highly-collectable, Beanie Babies?
Oh wait, it's not 1995 anymore.

Brass, Lead, food, etc etc. if Its' on a computer it ain't gonna be worth 💩 . I see it now : I got 50000 bucks in bitcoin someplace on the web we can't see, wanna trade for that rabbit? NO. Really, it's the same story for gold or silver, UNLESS I have a place to trade it, its scrap metal.

I SHTF...

I would swap an oz of gold for a working tractor with fuel.

Or accept an ounce for 500 rounds of ammo.

As soon as I get a new flux capacitor for my time machine I am going to travel back in time, and buy some, then sell it 4 months ago, buy a bunch of gold and silver and perhaps some other heavy metals with it, but flux capacitors are on back order until Faucci starts telling the whole truth,so....

I would be interested in a working flux capacitor :)

If it sounds like they are about to become available I will post it here, then you can fix your time machine and I won't be solely to blame for ripping a huge gash in the time space continuum:devil:

My investment isn't about bartering for a grid down scenario. That would be completely counter-productive and wouldn't make a lick of sense considering it's on a computer. However if (in my case, SHIBA) ever hit as little as one cent I would make an enormous profit off a small investment which could in turn be used towards firstly, the Lord, then my homestead. This is about the here and now, not the apocalypse.

This is called "speculating" and is perfectly fine to do with disposable income.
Much better than investing in a ski-boat.
But like the 'penny-stocks' from years ago, people get carried away playing with it. Beware.

I buddy of mine has been doing it and its been making him huge profits. But I am still leery of it and getting in after the getting was good is not my MO.

Yeah my kid told me to buy SHIBA a few weeks ago so I did. I'm still net positive on that. My crypto has done pretty well! To me its just play money, don't have a lot of money in it, but now I can sell it off and fund our well for the property.
My brother is really into it and has made bank!

Sell sell sell! (is what the Duke guys were saying in the movie Trading Places)
Paper profits based on how much something has gone "up" are not real until you sell.
Nothing worse than seeing something go up 500% and watch it go back down 500%. :(
*Disclaimer: This is not investment advice. Super has 'play money' invested too.

I would agree with you on that. For some it can easily turn into an addiction.

no that is one of four chances to be too rich that I missed.
I do invest, but not bitcoin, wish I had in 2010, my company stocks went from $62.00 to $7.50 when a buy out fail. 62.00 -:-7.50 =8.266
So I could have cleaned up, but I missed it, the stocks did split four times in thirty seven years, so I retired early.
I did this with no training, had I known what I was doing, it would had been better, but I have not missed a meal, so it all good now.

I threw some play money into crypto about a month ago: Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana. By play money, I mean money I would be willing to lose in several visits to a casino. (So, only enough to get my wife mad at me if I lost it all. ;) )

I also put some of my retirement savings into Grayscale Bitcoin and Ethereum funds about two months ago (or so). Not really play money, but not so much of my savings to harm me greatly if I lost it all. (My wife is actually a more liberal investor than I am, so this actually seemed more safe.)

Big swings up this week...but I don't really own enough to get rich...that was made clear to me today. I was just trying to put some wealth into something other than the US Dollar. Granted, there is not much behind cryptocurrencies. I guess we all have to ask ourselves what is really behind the Dollar. More than crypto, to be sure...but......

Not sure if I will keep this up. Just watching and thinking.

Totally get this.

The only reason I acted is that a friend of mine has been trying to convince me that it is still very early. Who knows??? I certainly don't.

I put $100 into cryptos a while back. I've just been watching it bounce around. Just checked it. Currently at $212

I saw a 20 something kid on an talk show youtube. He invested in Bitcoin when he was 14, that was 2011. He used his grass cutting money, at 18 he was a millionaire.

You know...when you can pay for hay with crypto...crypto will have arrived, and it will be time to get more crypto!

I buy my hay from the couple that own the shop I take my truck to. They are considering taking cryptos at the shop so you never know.....

I invest in Index Funds. The coins themselves are too volatile for my taste.

However, I expect the underlying technology (blockchain) to become the backbone of of any/everything that requires record keeping, including financial transactions. The US will be slow to adopt, but I expect the USD will be converted to blockchain in the next 10-20 years. Sounds scary at first...but ask yourself, how much of the COVID stimmy money got turned into physical currency? The vaaaaaaast majority was just a bunch of 1's and 0's buzzing around between computers. To you and me, there's not a meaningful difference between that and blockchain. IMO, the biggest end-user advantage of blockchain in general is the instant "transfer of ownership". Meaning you won't have to wait for days at a time for a transaction between 2 entities to be processed. You can send money to a relative as fast as you send them a text message.

I still use a central exchange (Coinbase) for my baby crypto account. Seems like I need to figure out how to participate more directly. I still have a lot to learn.

Another reason to change...Coinbase is so expensive:
  1. They take a cut of just under 4% of the purchase price, depending on how much you buy (the more you buy, the lower percentage you pay, but since I'm a small time buyer, I get smacked); plus,
  2. They sell you the cryptocurrency at a .5% premium over the list price in their own app. (I was more angry about this half percent than the larger charge, since this was hidden pretty well, but the bigger charge was well disclosed.)
So, almost a 4.5% premium.

Then again, this is much lower than the premium I pay for my metal holdings...about the same for a 1ozt. gold coin, but less than fractional gold, and definitely less than every silver coin or bar out there.

And, who knows what what my retirement account broker takes out of my accounts when I'm not paying attention.
