Here is my pet peeve on food and any other government assistance. My first husband left me when my kids were quite young. I worked but still had trouble buying food and paying bills. I applied for everything I could and qualified for nothing. I “earned too much”. At various times in my life I’ve had no electricity, my gas was turned off as was my water. Meanwhile, I worked in a hospital. What I assumed was “illegal aliens” were getting free medical care and all kinds of help. They came in with medical cards and spoke no English.

I think government help should have time limits. You get help for a year or so then it stops. That gives time to get a job and get on their feet. If anything, offer them vocational training. Anymore, welfare is a generational thing. It’s a families way of life and it should not be.

I’ve seen beggars in a area populated by stores. The beggars were standing just a few yards away from a McDonald’s that had a “hiring all shifts” sign staked in front of it. A social worker pointed out to me that the homeless rarely beg and I think that’s true. They live their lives as best they can. It’s the lazy that beg.

I was doing my prepping long before I got f**ked up, up to 60% of my bring home, if I hadn't, I'd likely be living in an abandoned house or under a bridge with the meth monkeys and the bike people. food stamps. hard decision for some. im disabled, live on SS and am just a sneeze above federal poverty level. my food stamp monthly amount is $23. i turned it down for years until things got rougher and that $23 became important.

the illgals streaming into the country get a free medical card, food stamps, housing, schooling. tho housing is becoming difficult as so many are coming in faster than the tates can set up a place for them and trying to get citizens to take them in their homes. now work permits but why work when its all free?

Food stamps are no longer food stamps.....instead, it's a debit card that can be used on wayyyyyyy too many things. I saw a lady in front of me (with a toddler in tow) buy junk food at a gas station with her card and then go next door to the KFC and buy crap food there too. Of coarse her hair and nails looked fabulous! I saw the card and the emblem on it that says what the card was, so I know it wasn't a regular ole' CC. The KFC had signs on it's windows saying the card was welcomed there.

If someone needs assistance, that is the duty of charities.....NOT the government. However, if those cards are going to be used, they should only buy the basics and not fast food and energy drinks. Offer classes to teach people how to use those staples. Geez, that's what schools used to be for! Now they are just indoctrination centers to dumb down the population. Oh how our country has slid down into a pit. Jazzy, you are right.....it's not gettin' any better anytime soon.

I get 180$ in food+bill money to go along with my lousy 20$ a month food stamps, fun fact. it only works for fresh foods and approved canned goods, and does NOT work on soda, candy, chips, or snacks. the stamps will work on junk food IF it's EBT registered, fun fact too, it will work for Gatorade but not Powerade. NEITHER works for ANY deli item but cold stuff like yesterday's chicken or sandwiches. Big plus, however, I CAN pay utility bills with it!

What I personally have issues with is the system that is running those programs

Food stamps was imitated as a temporary program to help those that are in need a helping hand uNTIll they get on their own 2 feet

The system that runs this program does not cull the abusers it just keeps cranking out stamps.

Here in Mississippi, welfare has to give you a minimum of 24 hour notice it is coming to inspect

Welfare inspects, poor woman has nothing, benefits continue
Welfare workers hours are 9-5

I'm not a fan of generational welfare and feel food stamps should be a life preserver to help you get back to your ship. That being said, charities have plenty of trouble getting donations to provide that help.

How do we change that paradigm? How do we get more people to help out the charities so that they, in turn, can help those that need the temporary assistance.

People need to get out of bed on a Sunday morning and start going back to Church
Help starts at the local level, The Church is a local spot for the community to interact with each other

We have some very liberal friends (by my standards anyway). They work at the local food bank doling out boxes of food to people who supposedly are too poor to buy their own. Even they admit that very few of the people who come begging for food actually need it. Many of these people, like most people on welfare, just want something for nothing. We have a senior center in town that fixes lunches for old people, plus they have Sunday meals too. The wife and I have donated a lot of eggs, beef and pork to the senior center.
There are plenty of places available for people who truly need the help.

I had a discussion with my dad about all this ( he lives in Germany and is very conservative and also does not believe in welfare, which is worse there than here)
I told him if you are poor in the US, you get a lot of stuff for free. We get free healthcare ( medicaid) , our son's college is mostly paid for now. We pay less in property and vehicle tax because we are farmers.
He said he would not want to live like that.
I told him we paid around 30% in income taxes when we lived in Florida and had jobs. The income taxes back then were much more than the income we live on now.
So I feel like first of all, I paid a ton into the system, and it's about time we get something out.
Second, I personally hope the entire system crashes and we start over. The only way to make that happen is by running the government out of money.

There are no people in the US that are truly starving. The end. Just look around. Compare the average American to photos of starving people in India or Africa. You'll see a literally big difference

What state wont let your roll over your snap balance? You might loose snap if you dont use the card for months. Never heard they remove unused balance each month. Hard to believe since snap amount went back to pre covid amounts.

My ex gets some kind of food assistance through the state. It's around 500 a month and she has to use it up or the program will re-evaluate her situation and possible reduce the benefit. She has some special dietary needs and shops at organic grocery stores a lot so she uses it up easily. For her, our daughter, and her other daughter, that 500 isn't a huge amount...

I have said for many years, our welfare system is broken from years of fraud. I think in order to save our country, we should stop all government assistance and re-vet every applicant again. It is only when this occurs that we will find many of these lazy arses will have to buy some work boots, put down their alcohol and smokes, and find a job.
