Every year there are so many great free projects posted for us! Here are just a few of them.

Carole at My Carolina Home is doing one that is really appealing to me. I made last year's mystery and she give nice clear instructions. I hadn't planned on doing another one but I think she just hooked me again!

Barbara Brackman will post her patterns the last Wednesday of each month.

Pat Sloan has posted the January pattern of her new mystery called "Let's Go Camping".

The Fat Quarter Shop is doing another charity BOM this year.

Quilt Doodle's BOM's are only free for the month they're posted. When the new one comes out, the previous one goes to her Etsy shop. She's giving us a sweet snowman theme. They're applique but are perfect for using the fusible machine applique method.

There are a lot of creative people in the world. Some have learned how to create great projects and to lead a bunch of others to make their designs. There are all kinds of mystery quilts out there. You have no idea what it will look like when it is done, just buy the fabric and follow along.

Carole at From My Carolina Home has posted her first installment and I'm so tempted to start this one with her. She promises there are no HSTs so it's apparently all squares and rectangles - the name of this one is Square Dance! I'll try to hold myself back and just save the steps but ... hmm...

I think I just fell off the wagon - the quilt wagon that is. I've been doing really good about staying with my UFOs and not starting new projects but then I found this one from Margaret Leuwen that I can't resist. She does a video to show how to make each month's step and she won me over with the first block. I've always liked the star pattern she uses but usually avoid Y seams. She shows an easy way to make them without actually making them so, I'm in. But, hey, I made it a whole month into the new year before starting a new project!

I don't know how many of you do applique but a new BOM is just starting at Sentimental Stitches and it's such a beauty. She's reproducing the patterns from an antique quilt and they look like they'd be fairly simple shapes for applique - comparatively speaking, that is! I used to do a lot of machine applique and these would work well for that, too. The sashing used is one of my favorites because it's so simple and it can really spread a few blocks out into a larger quilt.

Through the year I've seen a few online projects that really tempted me but I've managed to resist starting another UFO so I could keep working on the ones I already have. Eleanor Burns is starting a new BOM with free patterns and I've given in. It looks like it will be a combination of piecing and fusible applique and if you've avoided doing applique, believe me, her technique is the one to use because it is very easy. The first block and the finishing instructions are posted. It looks like the finished size of the quilt is 52 x 68. I'll probably make some extra blocks to stretch mine to fit a twin size bed. To show that I'm seriously going to make this one, I even ordered the kit for the first block and I never order kits! Any extra blocks I make will use fabric from my stash. If anyone else is interested in making this, I can post it as a quiltalong so we can share our progress. So take a look and let me know what you think!:)

I'm making a guess that other farm animals will be made the same way. Sew the squares together and then use a template to cut the shape of a horse or whatever. Have you done her fusible applique before? I do almost all of my applique that way because it's so much easier. I've sewn my pieces down with a zig zag stitch but for this one, I'm going to use a buttonhole stitch. I probably won't get the block kit for a week to ten days so I can get a couple of other things cleared out before it gets here.

For anyone not familiar with Eleanor Burns, here are a couple of videos from her Tales of First Ladies series. The first video is for Martha Washington's Wreath and shows how she makes the flowers with fusible webbing. The second video shows how she uses fusible applique to make her eagle medallion.

Maxine was here to visit me this past week and told me about Elenaore Burns "Down on the Farm". That Joy the Pig block is SOOOO cute!!! I'm joining in too!!! I'm using fabric from my stash and will probably make more than one of each block because I KNOW that ALL of my youngest grandkids are going to want one!!!! Guess this will take care of NEXT YEARS Christmas presents. :) I've had fun looking at all of the different versions of the block that people on the FaceBook page "Fun on the Farm" are making. Go check it out!!! You will want to join in too!!!

So glad you're going to join us on this! I ordered my kit and picked out some scraps for a second piggy block but haven't made them yet. I'm going to make doubles of some of the blocks so that I'll have 20 total and that will give me a twin size quilt. As soon as I get my blocks made, I'll start a separate quiltalong thread for this and we can post pictures of our progress. I can't wait to see some of the other patterns they give us. I'm guessing that all the animals will be like the pig - the animal shape cut out of some patchwork squares sewn together. Cute!!

Katie that would be wonderful to be able to share here.. yes please do it!!

Cosunflower mentioned that I came to visit her.. well YES I did and I had a wonderful time!! Cosunflower cooked a really yummy dinner for us (my husband came with me) & was such a gracious hostess we didn't want to leave.!! We plan on going back again soon..
