Our 11 yr old has been coughing every since her best friend and mother figure since 3 months old had passed.

What 3 days now. She has just started to have dry choking kind of cough since Alice passed. I know she has been really depressed for past week watching and staying with her old friend till the end. But not sure what is going on but she still eats good, runs around but stays on porch with her sister and us mostly.
Any ideas what it could be?
We gave her chicken noodle soup and it did seem to help her cough but she still has it.
I'm at my wits end with animals this past few months. And don't have a few hundred dollars for vet test right now.

@Meerkat is her or his nose warm and not wet ?, that is the sign of an infection of some variety. She most likely has a cold or it could be lung worm or heart worm if the dog eats snails, slugs or frogs or they are on a toy they love or on their fur too. If you haven't given her heart and lung worm medication this could be the cause. If she gets no better in the next few days take her to the vet and get her checked out.

Sewing, her nose is cold and ok and she doesn't feel warn with fever. So hoping it is just cold from stress. We will have to take her to vet if she gets worse of course or doesn't soon improve.
And we always give them heart worm med in the fall,so that is coming up in November anyway. Alice was given it once a year too and none of our dogs have ever had heart worms but first time for everything. I just don't think it would happen the same day Alice dies. She had her first cough that evening.

Thank you,.

My dog had the same issue the past few days. She was eating a lot of grass at the beginning and her coughing/hacking started the next day. I think it was her body trying to puke out the grass.
So far today, she hasn't had the issue. It only had it for a few days then it seemed to pass.

A woman who is fairly regular at the dog park told me her dogs caught kennel cough there. I didn't know that a dog would catch kennel cough at the dog park. If her dogs did, why didn't my RR? She said the vet confirmed that it was kennel cough, so I am just throwing that out there as a possibility.

She hasn't left the property in a few years since no shots or vet visits for about 3 years.
She isn't any worse now so hope it will go away soon.
Thanks again to all of you and will keep in mind what ya;; said. Right now tryign to get down my BP 189/107 so tryign to be calm.
