I love scarecrows and pumpkins and all the pretty autumn things. I have some of those things from the 90s, too, and I'm hoping to have most of this stuff cleared out by 2020! I think you'll be hooked on Dresden Plates after you make it because they're so simple to make the way she shows you. It really is one of the prettiest quilt patterns.

If they do it the same way they did for September, the new block will be posted tonight! I finished my little sunflowers but haven't made a block yet because I couldn't find a fabric that looked right for the background. As soon as I get that block made, I'll post a picture of it. Is everybody else current with their farm blocks?

Hi Katie!!! I am finishing up my sunflower block right now. I have all of the petals cut out and the middle for the big sunflower. I changed my mind several times about the petal colors and still am not sure what I want for the background so am sewing the flower first and then will put it against several things to see which looks best. :) I've been busy and didn't realize that it was time for the new one till I looked at the calendar Friday!!! What do you think the new one will be? I think an animal again. Maxine has bee super busy too and I don't think she even has her sunflower cut out yet. Her cowboy baby quilt is just ready now for the quilting. My boys came over a couple days ago and resealed my roof and cleaned the chimney for me. Its that time of year - time to get ready for winter weather!!! I will take a picture of my block tomorrow morning and try to post it again when the light is good. I can hardly wait to get up tomorrow and check to see what the next block is!!!! :)

I know what you mean about the time of year! I love autumn, it's my favorite season. We've had a cool spell the past few days and I really enjoyed the change. It was 47 degrees one day and I had to laugh because it felt so chilly but in February that 47 degrees feels really warm. lol I loved the sunflower so much that I'm thinking about making a whole quilt next year. I have plenty of yellows and greens so all I'd have to do is cut out the blades and sew them together. We'll see. When this started, I had the idea that it would be all animals and then we got the sunflowers and they're great, too! At this point, I'm not sure what we'll be getting but when it's all done, I think it's going to be great. I've printed off a couple of animal outlines to make blocks with. One is a turkey and I thought about sewing squares together to make it like we did for the pig. I'm not sure, though, and might cut it from one piece of an autumn print fabric. When I start making it, that's when I'll decide.

I think that it will all be things that we see on a farm - a combination of animals, plants, buildings etc. I'm wondering if it will be like a calendar quilt and October would be something with a pumpkin - like maybe a barn cat and a pumpkin....Chicken and a pumpkin etc. It could be a turkey for November and maybe a snowman and some kind of animal for December? A person could really do whatever they wanted if they didn't like that month's BOW. :) I made the big Sunflower. It took me a bit to get all the petals fitted in a circle. I must not have made some of the tips completely the right way? I cut out 25 and it took 20. The circle in the middle turned out fine. Now I need to decide on the background and whether or not I want to add any leaves. I'll have to wait for morning now. With my cataracts, when it starts to lose light I just have to quit for the day. I got started too late in the day and had too many distractions. LOL!!!

I admit I'm a little disappointed with this month's block. I got spoiled by the cute pig and sunflowers! I'll make one block of this for the variety but I'll just use my stash and won't order the kit. I pulled some fabrics last night for my turkey and I'm going to make it just like the piggy block with the patchwork squares, the grass and the sun in the corner. I'm excited to see how it turns out. If they give us a turkey then I'll make their's, too.

You got it right, Kim. The sunflower has 20 petals in the large one and the little ones have 16. Sometimes you have to fiddle with them a little to get the narrow ends a little narrower for them to lay flat. I usually just put a little fold in a couple of the seams because after you put the circle on, it doesn't show anyway. Can't wait to see a picture of yours!

I was disappointed in this months block too Katie. I have some fabric blocks from a HT swap years ago. Some farm and some garden so I am going to make my block using those fabrics and see what it looks like. My sunflower is done except for the blanket stitch around it. Ill take a picture of it tomorrow with my tablet and try to post it.

Looking at the message board it sounds like a lot of people were disappointed but this one will look good when all the blocks have been put together. It would be kind of hard to make very many animal patterns as easy as the pig so they needed some things to stretch them out. I have a FQ of a sunflower print that is perfect for the Farmer's Daughter block so I'm getting more enthused about it now. I probably won't have any sewing time for a few days but I'm hoping to have everything finished by the weekend.

Hi, Meerkat! It might look complicated when you see the finished block but it's actually quite easy. Just take a look at the instructions and you'll see how simple it is when you go step by step. Quite a few ladies said they hadn't made a Dresden Plate before and were a little intimidated by it but they made beautiful blocks. You ought to jump on this little farm quilt we're making and give it a try! The patterns are free and there's plenty of help available.

Here's a quick video of Eleanor making the Farmer's Daughter block. You don't need all the fancy rulers she uses, though, I sure don't! Look at the instructions for the pattern and then watch the video. :)

We are too old and busy with too much to start another project but if things ever slow down here I'd like to make a quilt and do some painting.

And I do like your choice of colors too.

So I'm with everyone else here, a little disappointing, but I am wondering if this will be the center block with altering the farm related blocks and animal blocks around, maybe? Seems like it would just make sense if it is the odd ball block

As they release the patterns, they show a picture of the quilt with the block placement. On the top row it's the pig first, a second block and then the sunflower. On the second row, the Farmer's Daughter is in the center. Since I'm making extra blocks, I'll wait until I have them all to lay them out and see what looks the best to me. I'm still planning to make two a month so who knows how mine will end up! Here's the picture of the blocks.

I had thought about making a Sunbonnet Sue for this quilt and now I see how great she looks with these blocks! So glad that I hadn't decided on how to set my mini-sunflowers. I had been going back and forth on whether to put them on grass or just onto a plain background square. This really fits the image I had of how my quilt should look and I'm using this idea as my inspiration. I also plan to use the sunflower theme for extra blocks.

we do really need a love button on here. . . I love love love the way yours is coming together, especially with that boarder! Reminds me of fence post. Very good job indeed.

Very nice. If winter gives me time I may try this quilting thing. Still want to do the grandkids pictures on one.

I am so sorry! I put the link above the picture so you could see whose blocks those are but didn't explain. When I was typing I must have thought you could read my mind. :D That lady has used a couple of ideas I'd also had, like the Sunbonnet Sue and a white fence, so I wanted to show well hers went together. Here's another one I love. She wanted all her blocks to have the sky and grass so she made a small Farmer's Daughter block and hung it on a clothes line. Isn't that great! After we got our piggy block, I thought every month would be a different animal with that same background of green grass on the bottom and the sun in the corner. I started working on my turkey block today and that's how I'm making it - with grass and a sun. I'm not sure how good it's going to look but I'll post a picture when it's finished.

Maxine, it won't take you long to catch up on your blocks. They really do go together easily. If you're going to make a lap size quilt with 12 blocks, you can choose which Dresden Plate block you want to make. Hang in there, one day you'll look at that Cowboy quilt and it will be all finished!

Dani, the sashing pattern is called Garden Maze and it's simple to make. Here's a link to the free pattern.

I finally made my mini-Dresden block. I kept fiddling around with it but it never looked right with all three so I just plunked two of them down. I'll use the extra one on another block later on.

There's a great little quiltalong that started last spring and is winding down this month and some of the patterns would work with our Farm blocks. The very best one is number 11, a simple barn that would be perfect for us to use! It even has the 2" strip of grass across the bottom. The designer put pinwheels on hers but I'd skip those and put a sun in the top right corner. If Eleanor doesn't give us a barn for our BOW quilt, I'll definitely use this for my quilt. The last pattern of this quiltalong will be posted on October 16. All the patterns will be free until November 13, then they'll be gone. If you're interested in any of these, you'll want to print or download them pretty quick. Just click on the link to the designers web page and you'll see a tutorial for the block and a link to open the pattern.

This website is posting a free pattern every Monday and they're free for two weeks then she sells them for 50 cents each. She has a nice little appliqued ear of corn that will be available through the weekend because it was posted on October 1st. Sorry I didn't see it sooner. The blocks are 6" but I think this ear of corn could be worked into one of our blocks.

Guess we've all been really good because we got a big surprise this morning! A cute little pumpkin pattern as a bonus block! They even gave us the shapes to make a jack o'lantern face. The regular pattern shows using a few HSTs to make a star inside the pumpkin but I think I'll skip that and just use all squares. There's also a leaf shape that would work good with the sunflower blocks, too.

I won't do the jack o'lantern either. It would be fun to use if anyone made a calendar quilt, though, with each block representing a different month. Now I'm getting excited to see the November block and we still have over two weeks to go!! I think … hope … that we'll be getting another animal. I've given up on guessing what it would be except that it will probably have four legs … unless it's fowl :dunno:.

Hi Everyone!!! I just saw the pumpkin bonus pattern and LOVE it!!!! Made my day!!! I'm going to leave off the face also for the quilt but for a calendar quilt I WOULD use the face. :) I'm almost done with my FD block if I get off this computer!!! I got side tracked as usual. LOL!!! I'm making it with a chicken theme and with sunflower fabric also. Will post a pic of it and my sunflower SOON - I keep forgetting plus I am photo challenged. LOL!!! :) Dani - Are you making the quilt als0???
