I have a few things that come up for me as things I don't understand. You all probably do as well.

First for me, is when people use the term "Merica." I wonder what the origin of this is? I always want to correct anyone who uses it. Isn't it disrespectful to use this? What is the deal, please and thank you?

I think it is dumbed down to fit the society now, which is also dumbed down. Maybe?

"Things we Don't Understand, please share!"

Women.

The end.
LOL! I should have known this would come up! Many years ago, I listened to a series that I had heard on Christian radio that really broke down men versus women. I can't even remember the name of the minister, but Dr. David something. It was enlightening.

Men! Or just thoughtless men!
Or double dealing low down skunk men.
The end.

Mo, at this time in what happened to you recently, I totally get this!

I was being nice.

I totally get that! Been there! When I have been hurt, I go to the dark side and think and say unkind things, mostly not to the person who deserves them. It helps me to process and lifts some weight.

Yep nothing like a good hell raising to sooth the soul. Long as its short and temporary.
Guess I'm addicted.

I don't understand the word changing from Oriental to Asian in this younger generation. If I say Oriental, I'm looked at like the most awful racist ever. What about Ramen's Oriental Noodles? What about Oriental Trading Company?
I don't understand how words change overnight and I didn't get the memo.

I have "heard" that Oriental is now the wrong term to use. I missed the memo as well, but now use Asian instead.

I once had someone go off on me for using the word Hispanic instead of Latino. Denver Public Schools uses the term Hispanic on all of its forms, etc.

Then it is time for the mother to son chat about patriotism and propriety.

Hey, I know sometimes we can get a little wound up here, I really enjoy that. But do [sorry, thread derailment] you ever remember gut splitting hilarious moments at home or with friends and you can never remember what was said or why you cried laughing for 10 minutes?
Yeah, I don't understand that.
Earlier at the dinner table, we were all grumpy and sad, not normal for us, and quiet. I heard a noise coming from the stove, said "what the -?" and husband kinda expletive deleted, jumped up from his chair, tripped and stumbled into the kitchen, over to the stove. Two of the kids looked at each other across the table, then at me, while the other kid jumped up to help dad. It was an active boil, man!
I lost it and laughed until tears and silent laughter were obvious. My gosh. What's wrong with mom?
Maybe I'm just easily amused.
Sorry, back to you, @Weedygarden

Yep. That's another one. Hispanic. I don't hear Latino very much, but Hispanic is used here. Like the Hispanic Cultural Center. Now there's something I don't understand...the Cultural Center has business woman of the year, but you have to be Hispanic. Young people have to be Hispanic to receive most of the scholarships for college here.
So words for white people vary from state to state, too. Anglo, Caucasion, White. I've also seen White/Hispanic as one listing. Or White non Hispanic.

Oriental for Asian has been taboo for years! My politically correct sibling just about whacked me over the head on that one.
I don't know, I didn't get the memo on a lot of things. Mostly because I'm out of the office.

Yes, we used to laugh until we had tears running down or faces. Once in a while, something will still tickle me like that. I am usually a serious person, but their are moments.

When I was teaching, I had to be careful because something would get to me and I would literally have to leave the room. Ever see the school photos that were bad, really bad, snapped at the wrong moment? I can still remember some of them.

Once I was at a school musical performance. One of the girls was really not very smart. (Sometimes when you are a teacher in a school, you know too much about some children.) She was playing the violin and really didn't get it, had no idea what she was doing, in spite of it being the spring concert. She played by watching the person beside her, so every bow movement she made was one behind everyone else. She just copied the person, but was one stroke behind them. When their bow went up, hers went down and vice versa. OMG, I had to leave the room. I don't know why it was so funny to me, but it was.

I'm sorry, Mo.
But there are some good ones out there.
You just had bad luck.
Well, I wasn't looking when I found that one.
Maybe the next one will be better.
Not looking for the next one either.
Some people are perfectly happy to be a lone.
Besides that I was just poking fun at ZoomZoom's statement.
Life's too short to be bitter all the time.
And in a round about way, I wish him well.

I thought it probably was poking fun at his statement.

Yes, I am perfectly happy to be alone.

I think the change slowly took place starting in the '60s when Oriental evolved into a demeaning word as did the slang that was used for people of color. The easiest way I explain the more socially acceptable usage is Oriental is a rug; Asian is a race.

The Orient, as well as Asia, continue to be a geographical designation.

Understand women? THAT is NOT my job.
If a woman wants me to know something she should tell me. No hints, no games just say it.
If I want a woman to know what is going on in my mind I will tell her.

Men and women think differently. If a woman says something bad about men she is talking about someone else, not me. If a man says something about women most women take it as a personal commentary.
My wife believes I can read her mind... I can sometimes but I have to be tuned in to do so. Most of the time I am occupied with other things.
Both genders operate on emotions but men hide it behind a facade of logic - sometimes even to themselves. Men only use one hemisphere of their brains at a time. Women use both almost all of the time. Together men and women complete each other. We are better together than apart but I don't believe that we are monogamous instinctually. We have to work at that to be successful.
