I saw on some youtube posts lots of disruptions today folks are experiencing. I got on down detector to check stuff out after Ive been struggling with internet all day and noticed a lot of disruptions. I wonder if it is a satellite issue? You can click on many major provider across the board and dam near all of them are having issues.
It was reported ATM in Idaho are down by the boise area too. Anyone having issues??
So far here it is just my internet is slow and crappy..

My cousin was complaining that they couldn't call out on a long distance number all day from the phone in her phone shack. Her brother's phone in his shack was out, too. But local calls work. She had to use her daughter's emergency cell phone to call and see how we were. Just came back on for her a couple of hours ago.

What is a phone shack?

CenturyLink had a service failure yesterday encompassing 10 states. Took all day to get it resolved in my area.

She has talked about it before. The Amish have a phone shack with a recording device. They don't have phones in their homes, but in a shack out back.
Isn't that considered cheating? Do they also keep their Massarati in the barn?

Ha a Masserati.
It's not cheating to have a phone shack. But it's a ways from the house, so it's not like it's easy to use. It's a phone in a small shack room usually with an answering machine. You're not supposed to stay on it long unless it's an emergency. My cousin Perry had a skunk move in under his. It stunk real bad. He took his buggy to town and showed me he put a Renuzit solid air freshner in it. My favorite cousin Irene whose long distance cut out today had her phone go out a while back. Couldn't figure it out. The phone guy came and saw a badger sitting on the phone box near the road. He scared the badger away and found a rat had gotten into the box and ate the wiring. The badger was waiting out the rat. Ha. We have an old phone shack on our farm aways from the house, but we don't have a phone hooked up to it because we're not here much and we have cell phones. It used to be a number of families would share a phone shack and it would be down the road a bit. I do chuckle that the rule is that it's ok to watch tv or listen to the radio if it's not at your house. It's ok to hire a driver or ride in a car, but you can't drive it or own one. Alcohol can be consumed for medical reasons. My moonshine is popular for colds.

I am probably not the only one who thinks something is amiss with this.

No because you can go all over the place when you feel like it with a car. It takes a long time to go 10 miles in horse and buggy. Simply living would mean staying on the farm instead of going to the city all the time and turning into an English person.
Or are you meaning that taking care of a car is more simple than dealing with a live horse?

I've lost my signal 5 or 6 times tonight. Its really annoying!! Again as I was typing this!

I went to the atm before work and it was working, apparently the atm issue was closer to the boise area. I decided to fuel up and top off my truck before the weekend regardless. My phone service at work was off and on all night. It took me at least 10 tries to send out 2 texts . Other coworkers were having issues with their carriers as well.
Down detector is a fairly reliable sight for reports of issues . I know we had a moderate geomagnetic storm energize us starting last night and wonder if it is related. Lots of reports of 911 systems all over being down as well and 2 power substations were lighting up, one in NYC and also somewhere in Louisana (spell?) with all the other issues it made me wonder if we had very excited electricity moving about ..

Amish Heart, it is interesting to find some groups of Amish being a little more practical about things.

I grew up in PA Dutch country so I was in the thick of the Lancaster County Amish. But over the past few years, I've spent some time in Kentucky and Tennessee and have found a few settlements of Amish people in both places. They are pretty small groups so I would guess "practical" is really important.

There is a small group of them less than 10 miles down the road from us. Actually, they're delightful people, I would never say otherwise. But I did have a few surprises over the limited time we've spent with them. #1, some of them drive their own standard gasoline automobiles. (Actually, they have a 15 passenger van. Did I mention practical?) #2, they have a gas tractor that they use on their farm. #3, the have electricity in their homes, which I have seen with my own eyes. #4, they built a church building. (And I know one of the questions, yes, they are Amish, not Mennonite. We have some of those around, too. Two different groups.)

When I left PA (almost 20 years ago, so it may be a little dated), I would never have seen any of those. But I find it interesting that in the tiny communities near me, these things aren't uncommon. Yes, they still have horses & buggies. Yes, they still do some of their farming with horses. And even though I see electricity in their homes, some still maintain things like wood stoves for heating and cooking. (The KY family I'm most familiar with don't maintain a wood cook stove, but I can't remember if their kitchen range is gas or electric. Doesn't matter, really.) Back in PA, they always met for church in a home and we'd see the little wagon get taken from place to place, which always seemed like it would be a pain week after week. So when I heard that our local Amish congregation had built a church building, it was quite the surprise. I had never heard of that before. I say, "good for them"! Sometimes practical can trump tradition.

The Beachy Amish in this area drive cars, have a church building, have electricity. A lot of the Mennonite women in this are not Old Order Mennonite like my grandma was. She married an Old Order Amish man, my grandpa, and if she were alive today would be mistaken for Amish. My family here are Old Order Amish, so still horse and buggie. But they use solar energy, tractors with air in the tires (so they can be driven on the road to the store or wherever), tractor farming (not horse farming), emergency cell phone allowed, phone shack ok. They have pretty easy rules here. Still the church wagon...church every two weeks and you have it twice, then it's moved to another farm. Woodburning stoves, not woodburning cookstoves. This old farmhouse we have, boy I wish the old cookstove was still in it. I can tell where it used to be. We have a woodburning stove for heating in it. Amish are as different as the community they live in. The Schwartzentrubers are very different. Amish live in the community that they most agree with. If they don't like the rules, they move to the community that most matches the rules they like. They don't try to change where they are. My cousin Harry moved up north to a smaller Kansas community for awhile, along with his nephew who owned the farmhouse we now own. The rules there were very strict, and he believed in them and that's why he moved. Harry moved back here a few years later, missed everyone. His nephew and his family stayed.

She has talked about it before. The Amish have a phone shack with a recording device. They don't have phones in their homes, but in a shack out back.

Where is the logic in that? Thats just more work, huh ? Plus runnign to the phone at night could be dangerous.:ghostly:

I bet some get a lot of colds.
