Amish Heart, it is interesting to find some groups of Amish being a little more practical about things.

I grew up in PA Dutch country so I was in the thick of the Lancaster County Amish. But over the past few years, I've spent some time in Kentucky and Tennessee and have found a few settlements of Amish people in both places. They are pretty small groups so I would guess "practical" is really important.

There is a small group of them less than 10 miles down the road from us. Actually, they're delightful people, I would never say otherwise. But I did have a few surprises over the limited time we've spent with them. #1, some of them drive their own standard gasoline automobiles. (Actually, they have a 15 passenger van. Did I mention practical?) #2, they have a gas tractor that they use on their farm. #3, the have electricity in their homes, which I have seen with my own eyes. #4, they built a church building. (And I know one of the questions, yes, they are Amish, not Mennonite. We have some of those around, too. Two different groups.)

When I left PA (almost 20 years ago, so it may be a little dated), I would never have seen any of those. But I find it interesting that in the tiny communities near me, these things aren't uncommon. Yes, they still have horses & buggies. Yes, they still do some of their farming with horses. And even though I see electricity in their homes, some still maintain things like wood stoves for heating and cooking. (The KY family I'm most familiar with don't maintain a wood cook stove, but I can't remember if their kitchen range is gas or electric. Doesn't matter, really.) Back in PA, they always met for church in a home and we'd see the little wagon get taken from place to place, which always seemed like it would be a pain week after week. So when I heard that our local Amish congregation had built a church building, it was quite the surprise. I had never heard of that before. I say, "good for them"! Sometimes practical can trump tradition.

My friend in Georgia likes to go to Amish cannery to can her meats. Also they buy from the store in Helen I think it is.

Phone and internet outages have been noted from cost to coast. Some 911 systems have been down while others remain up. Some ATM machines are down while others remain unaffected. Land lines don't seem to be affected.

When you call 911 that call is directed to regular 7 digit phone number. It might be a good idea to know the seven digit number for the local fire/ambulance station nearest to you.

Am I the only one who wonders what the source is? Is it a terrorist test? A government test?

No. You are not the only one. Probing attack? China threatening President Trump in hopes of getting a better trade deal?

I read some speculation that the solar storm we just had might have been the issue with it all ?? but it is all guessing. In the past a 5 solar storm would not have done this kind of damage at all but our earths shields are weaker but really I don't know..
I guess everyone is still trying to figure it all out still..

My net is fiber-optic at over 100 megabytes/second. I haven't had any problems lately.

My DSL is running at 3 meg,
No problems today other than I can only get 3 meg download speed and some people like to brag about their fiber optic. :)
Maybe I need to move from Central Washington to SE Washington.

We had minor interruptions on Friday and major issues Saturday night with both our internet and our cable. It got to the point K was about to call Spectrum to cut our service.

Mediacom has been good for me. Except when the water company cut the lines while digging stuff up.
I do use my Verizon account on phone as a hot spot when away or when the Mediacom line is cut. Works well for me.
Right now at Mom's using Dish and their internet is adequate most of the time, but not like my fast as I can get at home.

There is some talk on the channels that Century Link has Deep State connections and this is a "white hat" operation. I'm looking at the ownership connections regarding Century Link and so far the scenario makes some sense.

Where is the logic in that? Thats just more work, huh ? Plus runnign to the phone at night could be dangerous.
Kerosene lanterns, wood heat can lead to house fires. By the time they could reach a "English" neighbor the house or barn would be burned down to the foundation(s). So they would put a phone house close to a group and split the cost. In my part of the country more and more of the Amish Bishops are allowing cell phones so the phone houses are no long needed.

Some of the elderly Amish in our area have emergency cell phones indoors. It's dangerous to use the phone shack when it's icy outside. One was used to call/text us on our way up here. That was the day that phones were screwed up. Highways were shut down and my cousins didn't hear from us. Their local calls from the phone shack was fine, but not for long distance. They called us on their cell phone to my cell and just got a beeping sound. Their text came through, and I could send a text back. It took us two days rather than the usual one day. They had heated our farmhouse, turned on the water, and wondered where we were.
