I was just going through the kids meds checking amounts and when I can call in for refills and had a thought. What are the fillers in the pills made from? Will the dismal crop reports, expected harvest, have an effect on manufacturing medications?

@Terri9630 it looks like tablets have mainly sugars, lactose or saccharides in them as fillers and then they have a coating on them too for tablets.

Here is a link to study for you - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excipient .

From a doctor prepper friend tablets and medications will last 5 years past expiry but will loose potency after that, just increase the dosage. So yes you can stock medications too but the medical powers that be don't want people to know and encourage us to dispose of them on the best before or expiry dates. Most dates are put on there to save them legally more so and not to do with the actual drug's expiry date.

I've been on my allergy meds for years and have plenty of those but the kid just started her meds. Just trying to stay ahead of possible price jumps.

The doc gave us a 90 day prescription for the one to keep her blood pressure up but only a 30 day for the one to keep her heart rate down. I tried to call in the refill a week early like I do for my allergy meds but aparently its not allowed. I'm going to see if the doc can do a 90 day for that too.

These refill regs are irritating. The migrane meds... Only 9 imatrex pills and can't get a refill for 23 days without a new prescription. So every 23 days I refill it and buy a bottle of Excedrin migraine.

Ok,ok I'm done whining. Thanks for the link Sewing.

I always figured it was corn starch or a soy byproduct or such.

Off topic, but about migraines:

How well does the imatrex work for your migraines? What about the Excedrin migraine?

If you look at the ingredients in the Excedrin migraine, and regular migraine (or maybe extra-strength, I don't remember exactly), the ingredients are identical. I used to buy Excedrin migraine at Costco and it was always a dollar more than a different variety, and when I compared the two, they had identical ingredients. As a migraine person, two tablets didn't cut it. Usually 3 would cut it, but once in a while, my migraines would only be diminished with 4 tablets. That is a lot of tablets, but a migraine completely takes everything out of you.

She is on 50mg of the imatrex every 2 hrs if necessary. Usually 2 of the Excedrin migraine works about the samebut those are every 6 hrs. I haven't let her take more than 2 at a time. I actually buy the generic, it works pretty well on sinus headaches too.

@Terri9630 the reason why you can only get a limited amount of certain medications on script is they are on the restricted drug list and you can only usually get one script at a time with no repeats. Strong pain medications are on that list here such as panadeine forte, Endone and others so your migraine medication could very well be on the restricted drug list but check with your doctor and they should be able to tell you. If your medical system works over there like here you may be able to get a bulk script if you have a recognised debilitating condition so worthwhile asking telling them you quite often need more than the prescribed amount in the 23 days.

In regard to medications if they have the same ingredients and dosages mgs they are the same thing. Recently one company that had a number of different brands of Paracetamol for varying things like arthritis pain and others were hauled over the coals and fined because every one of their varying paracetamol were exactly the same ingredients. They viewed it was deceptive conduct and gave them huge fines.

We go for the generic brands of medicines which are the same or similar ingredients but sometimes under half the price for the same thing.

Excedrin is just a buffered aspirin. Excedrin Migraine adds caffeine. When I had migraines nothing would touch the pain. I was given every narcotic in the book.
Imatrex is not a pain reliever. It is a compound that attacks the source of the migraine. It was the first medication that relieved my migraines. If Imatrex doesn't work on your headache then it's not a migraine.

Some insurances do not allow 90 day on certain meds. Then there's the pharmacy...CVS allows us 90 days, but Walgreens limits. So we used our local small independently owned pharmacy for 90 days. He just asked husband if he can switch it to 30 days, even tho the doctor allows 90 days. It happens that the pharmacy makes less money on the 90 days. This independent pharmacist loses $200 if he gives my husband a 90 day, instead of (3) 30 days. Told him it was inconvenient, since husband is handicapped. He offered free home delivery, since it's on his way home. Walgreens made the change lately, and have even gone as far as breaking open boxes and repackaging for 30 days supply over 90 days. Not happy with them, but daughter works there and can get an override on that, at least at her location. These are not pain meds or upper tier meds that require ID or watch. These are routine asthma meds.

Gotta love the V.A. I get a 90-day supply by mail on everything except narcotics. Have to pick up the Oxycodone and Morphine in person and sign for it, max 30-day supply. Fortunately there is a V.A. Clinic/Pharmacy less than 15 miles away. The Mobile, AL Clinic and the Biloxi VA Medical Center are both top notch...never had any problem getting appointments, being seen on time, getting prescriptions, etc. Some VA Centers are terrible, but Mobile & Biloxi are great!!

Excedrin migraine has acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine.

I stock Excedrin migraine in the teacher's bathroom at the school. It's a go to. The caffeine helps.
I carried it in my purse for years. It was known that I had migraines and carried pain medication for them. People would come and tell me they had a headache and did I have any Advil or whatever? No, I could carry M & M's because they would actually be more effective. Often, people would respond, "I can't take aspirin." Another perfect example of people not being prepared.

Now I carry generic aspirin in my purse. I don't have migraines like I used to. Going low carb really helped with headaches.

I don't have headaches often but I get arthritis aches almost daily. Excedrin migraine or Aleve works for it. I always carry something in my purse, as well as bandaids. A full first aid kit in my trunk. Alka Seltzer is my go to for a sick stomach, and I buy a large box of it at Sams.

There are several pain medications: Motrin, Aleve, Advil, aspirin, Tylenol, and more. My grandparents used aspirin for their aches and pains and I have used what they used my whole life.

I use ibuprofen for headaches and general pain but I don't think I take more than 6 tablets in a year.
I get osteo arthritis due to an old work injury but I just walk this off by going for a nice country walk .
