I have several people that I follow on Youtube. There are some very interesting homesteaders, building their off grid lives.

This is one channel that I am following of a man who is building a home for his family, almost all by himself. Actually he is building two homes. He has the foundation poured for a larger home, but had an idea to build a shop with living space above it. I think the shop house will now be a two story home for his family.

This is a couple who have 5 acres in Idaho who are building a timber framed home. They work long hours almost everyday. The wood for the timber frame was all milled by the husband and planed by the wife.

They had a timber frame workshop at their home a month or so ago, and the videos of that are being rolled out now.

I have sooo many questions, that maybe someone could help. What is the reason for partially burning the timbers for the roofing and the floors? Will that little root cellar really work? No toilet? You can sure tell I am a city boy, but really loved that build! :angie:
Wood is hardened by fire. Tool handles used to all be fire hardened before you bought them. Fire hardened wood is as old as time.

Having been watching every video he has made for almost a year, an outhouse is in the plans, along with a few other ammenities.

He is also planning a bath house so they will be able to bathe. He also wants to have a way of doing laundry on site. If it were just him, he'd be living there full time. He wants to make it more comfortable for his wife. He also wants a wood shed, and to have a couple years worth of firewood.

Thanks for merging the threads! I did not know that Weedy had posted it earlier.
Its okay. I appreciate the merge of this thread. My post was maybe my first, or one of my first and it just disappeared. I never saw it again, and didn't know what happened to it. Then I saw your post and decided to go back see if i could find mine. Not one comment or like on it. It just fell into oblivion.

Thanks, @Weedygarden
A couple are ones I subscribe to, too, but the first one is new to me. I skimmed through a couple of his uploads and find it interesting - will watch some more. Thanks for posting!
I've come to learn what a resource YouTube can be with the average Joe Schmoe posting his experience - I just don't watch it as often as I'd like.

I saw this a couple days ago. It made me think of the movie about the Jews that escaped into the forest, Defiance, and how they must have had to build structures similar to this one.
That was an amazing movie, i have watched it a million times, and will never grow tired of it, I need to find some were were i can make structures like in the movie for practice, but everywhere i look its private land, and i'm sure i wont be able to make structures like in the movie

Well you need to take a little trip to the woods sometimes. Go primitive camping.

Yea and that junk mail may come in handy for some crumpled toilet tissue in that outhouse, that and catalogs and newspapers.:)

They are not finished with the house yet, but they are so close. Dry wall and painting is where they are at, flooring coming soon. They want to move in before school starts.
