I thought I had a container gardening thread to put up for another idea for our new to gardening new members.but guess not.

About 3 or 4 years ago we grew these organic veggies mostly with compost.

This is the only way I can garden. We have really bad poor shale here. I would need tons and tons and TONS of organic matter to get it up to snuff to grow food in it.
Its why I want to try to grow potatoes in containers this year

VDragonladt me too. That way in draught or heavy rain still can grow some crops. Plus I'm tired of weeding all the time.

I use raised beds about waist high.
Was having trouble with knees, back when I first started using them.
Knees are fixed, but back is another problem.
Upside to waist high raised beds, few weeds.
Down side limited space to grow anything.
Easier to rotate out crops though.
Have grown onions, lettuce, green beans in flower pots though.
Also going to try growing potatoes, carrots, okra in a whiskey barrel.

How did the asparagus hold up over the winters? Did it come back the next spring?
It came back but it time to get it established.
So I planted several plants that took awhile to get established in the same whiskey barrel.
Asparagus, garlic etc.
Used heavy mulch to protect save the moisture for the plants.
Have also grown blueberries, thornless blackberries , raspberries in stock tank, or whiskey barrel.
Okra is going into whiskey barrel next to asparagus barrel.

This was my very first go at container gardening. I was surprised at the amount of food I did get from them even though I was an amateur lol. Have learned a few things since then

VWDragonL, we have had many more experiences than successes, but it is always good to have a backup or alternative plan.

I commented about how great these plants looked and what a good job you did the first time. I edited it to fix typos and forgot to rewrite the compliment on your plants.:great::thumbs:

When I try things, like growing food producing plants, in the garden or in pots, I call them science experiments. What works one year, fails another year. I can grow beautiful cabbage or cauliflower one year, and the next year it is a complete failure. I think those carrots in a bucket are a great experiment that I want to try this year. I have some buckets, but I wish I had many more. I can plant in my yard, but I am wanting to experiment with things like potatoes and carrots in buckets. i have been working on growing herbs in pots, with some success, some failures.

I agree that it doesn't always turn out like we are hoping. Thats why we should have a couple ways to grow, liek if water bgins to be a problem best way to save water whil growing is hydropoinically. Thewater is continously moving and purifing itself so it can be used without changing ,just add to whats lost to plants which is not much at all.
Containers don't need electric power like hydros. But those little pumps don't use much power and on timers so nto pullign much but will have a few surges..
