I have been seeing that mumps has become a problem in a few places. I saw that some in ICE detention centers had mumps. Now this Navy warship is on quarantine.

When I heard about mumps at the detention center, I was talking to someone about it. They said that you can catch some diseases, even if you have gotten immunized. They said immunizations vary in effectiveness, and some are only 80% effective. Also, it may be the variety of virus that is not in immunization mix. I thought, and I believe the news is saying this, that the people getting mumps were not immunized. Also, immigrants may not be immunized and the virus is being spread in detention centers. I really don't know.

(CNN)A US warship has essentially been quarantined at sea for over two months and has been unable to make a port call due to an outbreak of a viral infection similar to mumps.

Twenty-five sailors and Marines aboard the USS Fort McHenry amphibious warship have been diagnosed with parotitis, which causes symptoms similar to mumps, according to US military officials.
Until CNN asked about the incident, the US military had not disclosed it. The illness first broke out in December, with the most recent case being reported on March 9.
"None of the cases are life-threatening and all have either already made or are expected to make a full recovery," the Fifth Fleet said in a statement provided to CNN.

All seven hundred and three military personnel aboard the ship have received measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) booster vaccinations, according to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet headquartered in Bahrain.

The ship is currently operating in the Persian Gulf region and military medical officials are assessing when it may be deemed medically safe to make a port call.

A US military official tells CNN that when there are major disease outbreaks, a decision may be taken to halt port visits until 30 days after the last reported illness due to varying incubation periods.

But the Fort McHenry did make a port call in early January in Romania when it was in the Black Sea before traveling back through the Mediterranean and into the Middle East.

The ship includes elements of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. Since the initial case was detected on December 22, 24 of the 25 patients have returned to duty.

After they became ill, the patients were quarantined and treated in the ship's medical facility. Living and work spaces were disinfected.

None of the personnel had to be medevaced off the ship and all are expected to make a full recovery.
However, a military medical team specializing in preventative medical care is expected to deploy in the coming days to make an assessment if further steps may be needed, according to the official.

The ship, which carries Marines to perform amphibious warfare duties did have some of its scheduled training modified to deal with the outbreak's impact.

I had a miserable summer when I was 12. I had a throat infection and went to the drs for antibiotics. I had throat infections ALL the time. Someone in the waiting room had mumps. A few days later I had mumps. Just on one side. They weren't that bad. Three weeks later I had my tonsils out. Horrible summer.
I think illegals are bringing old illnesses in. I think that's why California mandated all kids have to be immunized before going to any public school. No waiver exceptions. Was talking to our neighbor in Kansas about her little one who had whooping cough recently. Some in the community got whooping cough even though they were immunized. She said the pediatrician said it was because the strain was different.

I had miserable & chicken pops.

I had mumps and I had the measles as a child. I remember little about having the mumps, except that I had them.

I was pretty young when I had the measles. I remember little about having them. What I do remember is that I was in bed and stayed there until I was well. I remember that the room was kept dark on purpose. I remember when I was well and I came out of the dark room and it was so bright.

Measles, mumps, chicken pox..... that was a time when your parents discovered another family's child had a disease you had not yet had and you go visit them. When I had the measles, mom had it in her head if I was exposed to bright light I would go blind. She put me in their darkened bedroom, with only a dim bedside lamp with a towel over it, and gave me coloring books to keep me entertained during the day. Try to do that in the dark. There wasn't a TV in their bedroom so it was a miserable three or four days before I was sprung from measles jail.

I remember getting the sugar cube with the polio vaccine.

I believe the polio vaccine was done in series of maybe two or three doses. I think we had to go more than once for it. It was important to my mother as one of the few nurses in our area. She visited people who were shut-ins, older people who were house-bound, but benefitted from her visits and kindness. She also had am older brother who had had polio. He had gone to California to live with an aunt for a while so that he could swim and exercise his leg.

I got to watch a revolving night light cast images on the wall and a gold fish swim around in it's 6 inch bowl. AND DON"T PICK THE SCABS!
