Adding solar to an old on grid homestead

We ran our motorhome 120 VAC 2,000 inverter/charger on 12 VDC, it was basically a test set up for going to our solar backup system, which runs on 24VDC, we bought the Magnum Energy 4,000 watt pure sine wave inverter because it could be stacked with other same type 4,000 watt inverters but as it...

    Booby traps

Flickers around here rip big holes in plywood, they banged a big hole in a friends barn, crazy because they could have just flown two feet lower to get to the same area.

Off grid power options and what do you use?

I did some research a few years ago and I came across vertical axis squirrel cage wind generators, from what I understood they are commonly used on sailboats, I like the idea but where we live, winds are infrequent and don't last long enough to do any backup charging. I'd love to have a water...

    Hi

It's interesting that you mention your blues rock music, it's only since I've gotten older that I have come to realize that a great deal of rock is actually blues and I've come to appreciate some of the music I wouldn't have listened to when I was a lot younger.

    Who Am I.....

Think of not spending more than you have in intrinsic values to back up what your money is valued at, for you it might be property, homes, businesses and for a nation it would be gold or silver, farms, ranches, factories, mining, or oil wells, etc. The present debt in terms of debt to GDP...

    Who Am I.....

It's one of the best systems to run by, if the USA ran by the Austrian economics system we wouldn't be in the trouble we're in now.

    Who Am I.....

Hello and a warm welcome from S.W. Oregon. My wife and I are coming up on our 50th anniversary and almost all of those years we've studied economics and we are well aware of Austrian Economics as well as the Keynesian system we presently run by, sadly we no longer run our money system by the...

    I Remember When . . .

There is a appliance and mower store in Grants Pass that's had a Maytag gasoline powered washing machine on display, it's in new condition, someone took very good care of it all those years.

    CrocDundee Arrives!

Hello and welcome from S.W. Oregon, you've come to a very good place. Back in 1965 when I got out of the Air Force Australia was wanting people to come there and I considered going but with my love of hiking around the country side, anyhow it's probably a good thing I didn't move there, seeing...

    Let's talk Supplements

When we lived in the Tampa, Texas area, we frequently drove by the Celenese chemical plant, one of their products was a chemical vinegar, white vinegar? Perhaps, unless otherwise labeled.

    Car Porn

The top pic looks a lot like the 1959 Tunnel Back Continental I bought for $40, installed the engine in a 59 Ford pickup which I rolled and then pulled the engine and installed it in my all time favorite Rat Rod, a 1951 Ford pickup, I often wish I still had that wild machine.

    What's everybody doing today?

Except when there is 6" of snow right where you need to crawl under the vehicle to change the starter out, yeah I've done that when I lived in Denver, thankfully the starter on my 289 Ford engine was very easy to get to.

    Hi from another noob

Hello and welcome from S.W. Oregon, I lived in Seattle up to the late 1960's, I loved hiking and fishing in the Cascades but greatly disliked every thing else about Seattle, where we live now is paradise. You found a good place to be, lots of great information on homesteading by people who live...

    Poison Oak

We've used vinegar with good results, also teas made from madrone tree leaves and soap root is supposed to help. Normally poison oak doesn't bother me, except for the time I dug a 500 foot long ditch for burring the water line from the cistern to the spring, in walking in the ditch the oils...

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

We plan to use the foods stored in refrigeration as quickly as we can after the grid dies as we understand that batteries will not be available for very long, thankfully we have a gravity feed water system and plenty of water storage to take care of freeze dried and dehydrated food rehydration...

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

It's nice to keep my beer cool, but of course a small spring house with a looping path of water, in our case, from spring overflow, would do that job as well as keeping milk products cool. I haven't built a spring house yet but it's on my list of things to be done. Oh in case of SHTF long term...
