Aloha Ripple Block of the Week

Step 2 is posted. Sorry I'm late but forgot to add it here. https://happycloudcreations.com/2018/01/23/aloha-ripple-qal-week-2-flying-geese/ After struggling with the tiny pieces of the still incomplete On Ringo Lake, I'm really enjoying working with larger pieces.

    Instapots, electric pressure cookers

I'm in an apartment, so space is at a premium. But when I was in my house with plenty of storage I too used the individual appliances. But I have to say I'm in love with the Instant Pot. As to canning. When the Instant Pot first came out the instruction book had directions for canning, but...

Aloha Ripple Block of the Week

I finished cutting out all the fabric for the first colour way. Will be working on the second one over the weekend along with the never-ending Bonnie Hunter On Ringo Lake mystery. This is the last time I do a mystery with such small pieces (Ringo Lake, not this Aloha one).

Aloha Ripple Block of the Week

Here's the link to the first step: cutting the fabric. I'm going to start with the blue/green/grey colourway and see how it goes before adding in the black/white/red. https://happycloudcreations.com/2018/01/16/aloha-ripple-quilt-along-week-1-cutting-our-fabric/

    Instapots, electric pressure cookers

I have an Instant Pot and don't know how I managed without one. I was able to get rid of my small pressure cooker, crock pot, rice steamer and yogurt maker as the Instant Pot does all that and more. I just made pulled pork yesterday starting with the low pressure setting to defrost the roast...

    Homesteader's Nine Patch BOW Quiltalong

Nice block -- I once made a quilt out of this block in shades of blue with a white background. It came out really classy.

    Homesteader's Nine Patch BOW Quiltalong

So, this is a mystery quilt, in that the participants will not know ahead of time what the blocks will be? If that's the case, I'll follow along and decide later if I'm going to make this. I'm a bit burned out right now on mysteries. BTW folks, I started a block of the week quilt along in...

    Homesteader's Nine Patch BOW Quiltalong

Katie, where do we find a picture of the whole quilt? I couldn't find it in your initial post, just links to "connecting blocks".

Aloha Ripple Block of the Week

Here are the fabrics I've chosen. The thing I like about this quilt along is the creator shows 4 alternative colour ways to the main one. I don't want to make a really bright quilt, so I chose her blue/green/grey colour way. Then saw the black/white/red. <sigh> I think I'll start with the...

    New Forum BOW

I'm already committed to the Aloha BOW -- see my post in this section. I didn't put it in Swaps because we will be quilting alongside each other, not swapping.

Aloha Ripple Block of the Week

I will be participating in a BOW (block of the week) through Happy Cloud Creations. I was very happy with the one she led this past fall, plus I fell in love with this pattern. It is called Aloha Ripple. Nice and modern looking but can be made more traditional by using different fabrics. It...

    Gifts To Sew

Although the grain of the fabric is important in garment making and housewares (like curtains), it is not so important in quilting as we work with small pieces. The standard in quilting to to cut crosswise rather than lengthwise.

    HELLO FROM OREGON

Welcome from Texas (and the HT board). I changed my name but kept my same avatar here so hopefully folks will recognize me.

    SOURDOUGH

I love sourdough bread, and my experience has been to start with a hotter oven -- 450 -- and turn the heat down to 350 after 10 minutes. The hotter oven will stop the bread from rising too much which could lead to a fall. To use the hotter oven, it is important the bread has doubled in size...

    Leaching Hardwood Ash For Lye

I followed the directions from an old Mother Earth News magazine. It's been over 30 years, but as I remember I used a large bucket with pebbles and straw in the bottom as a filter, put in the ashes and rain water and let it drip through. For the actual soap making I used a concentrated mixture...

    Leaching Hardwood Ash For Lye

I have in the past but had problems getting the right concentration. I never made much soap so decided it was better for me to just use the commercial stuff. But I would think if someone made a lot of soap and had the time to experiment, it would work great.

    Why I Left Homesteadingtoday.com & You Should

I was the one who started the thread at HT (I'm Belfrybat over there). I wanted to see what the official answer would be but also to alert folks of the TV program. I knew there would be a mixed response (there always is). Since I'm committed to a quilt swap through the end of February, I...

    Treading carefully into the group...

Welcome. I was Belfrybat on HT but have been trying to lose that moniker for several years now. I kept the same avatar so folks from there might remember me. I used to homestead but age and heath and forced me into the city, but I do have a garden and the "homesteading spirit". I've been...

    Embroidery

I used to do a lot of crewel work (embroidering with yarn) and enjoyed it. Then I moved to crocheting, and then to quilting. Much rather quilt as it's all done on the machine and is easier on my hands. Plus I feel like I'm painting with fabric and I enjoy that creative aspect of quilting.
