A Crow Is Liking Our Hens

I wonder how much you could sell crows eggs for at the farmers market.

    Deep litter method

I ended up scooping out roughly half and then spreading half a bail of straw. The other half went immediately outside the coop and in the boxes and in front of the boxes. The boxes I chamge out as needed. I think the straw will be a better option. But it doesnt have the same fresh scent as the...

    Deep litter method

When we first got chickens we decided on using deep litter with pine shavings. Its worked relatively well as far as keeping it smelling fresh and keeping bugs away. But it doesnt seem to break down very fast like some blogs have shown. Now I only had 5 hens who would only spend the night and be...

    Talk me down

Our yard is a mix of weeds and fast growing fescue. We have cow pasture on 2 sides roads on the other 2. The guy that leases the pasture seeds and fertilized for the cattle. Its one big bull and a bunch of females and I'm guessing he sells off the babies in the fall. I never really asked him...

    Building our dream coop...

First day outside after being "cooped up" for 1 1/2 weeks. I think they are 8-9 weeks old now. I have several showing signs of beards. Im hoping thats a good indicator of wether they will lay blue. We made a little chicken yard here so the big girls cant get to them but can check them out. So...

Well dang. Back to mini cow now. One animal does seem easier . and then i dont have to worry about selling a calf since we can use it ourselves.

And im not so much I was reading you can put up to 10 an acre. What do you think the goats would need. Keeping in mind I'm only tryung to provide enough milk ans meat for a small family and sell any offspring live if at all possible.

    Talk me down

Id assume thats the same as for aby animals and we dont go on vacations. But if we had to I know several people in the area that would help. There is a farm here in my county that i planned on visiting. I had considered goat. But I've read about them being so hard to contain and that they are...

    Building our dream coop...

I have been opening the kennel after the big girls go out in the AM. And closing it back up before I open the coop for the evening. I'm a week or 2 im guessing they will be able to go out into the little run we made for them until we formally introducw them to the flock.

    Building our dream coop...

Current set up in the coop. Got these 6 week old pullets 2 days ago. Ive prepared the older chickens by moving the layimg boxes out several weeks ago and keeping the coop door shut during the day. Their run is now about 2k sq ft. We had tried to let them have run of the yard but they were so...

    Gardening with chickens

Im noting that they were digging stuff up not eatinh the flowrrs. But they leatned quick that the best place for bugs was at the base of the plants. I lost several perrenials. :( and a 4 year old thyme bush I planted from a seed and servived 2 moves.

    Gardening with chickens

I can't imagine having them in the garden. I had to fence off a portion of the yard just for them after they decimated my flower beds. Had to hold off planting to make sure they were secure. They still have a ton of room...and I'll be enjoying a poop free deck and a mulch free sidewalk.
