    Garden 2024!

My garden is now on pre-spring hold... I am having some good luck with cool weather plants, but a lot of the stuff that does not like cool nights is going to have to stay indoors. The few warm days we had really put a hurt on the cool weather plants in the greenhouse, I think it saw 105F just...

    Garden 2024!

I ended up with a bunch of volunteer strawberries (thought they died) and carrots that were planted a year ago, didn't expect them. Another pleasant surprise was my 2 year old okra seeds, I planted 2 in each starter cup expecting poor germination, so for it looks like I got about 90% germination.

    Growing in Zone 7

So went out and checked after our frost my spinach came up... it had been planted for weeks but it's been too warm?

    Growing in Zone 7

I'm in 7a/b, the weather has been nice enough for plants to start coming up (highs between 60-80F)... But now we are getting frost 3 days in a row...

    Garden 2024!

Today we had fresh salad out of the outdoor garden... Spinach and 3 kinds of lettuce, it was pleasant. We have enough ready to harvest to start eating large salads every night now. I gave up on the over-wintered broccoli, it just bolted and was taking up valuable space, so I pulled it. Then I...

Adding solar to an old on grid homestead

So I need to give an update (~2 year anniversary of being fully operational), my system has been working fine, but I have been increasing my loads to get the maximum utilization out of the system. It works okay, but I smoked an ANL Fuse... This has got me to thinking that I would have been...

    Weather in your area?

I wait, because there's no window in my bathroom and I don't like showering in the dark... ;)

    Garden 2024!

Thanks for all the feed-back on weeds. Because I am constantly rotating my crops, I am also constantly fighting weeds, vines are the worst. Anyway this has lead to some heugh blunders on our part... Such as the year the wife pulled up all those little grass sprigs from the spinach patch, leading...

    Garden 2024!

Today I got off early and decided to pull weeds. Which leads me to the following question: What do you consider a weed? My definition is pretty simple, anything that is growing in my garden that I didn't intend to plant there this year.... What's your definition?

Is SOME amount of Vinegar good for you daily........???

We learned that if you wash some fruits and vegetables with white vinegar they will last much longer. Strawberries, broccoli, and cauliflower are the ones we fine benefit the most.

    Booby traps

Following @Magus, theme you could take a sheet with a whiffle ball tied in the middle and the whole thing connected to an elevated bungie by transparent fishing line (have the sheet and ball stuffed/hidden in a five gallon bucket). Imaging, sneaking around, hit the trip wire and a "ghost" comes...

    Garden 2024!

I like your approach, I used to use maps and a spreadsheet to plan things out. With my new growing system I am faced with a new problem, I am using an un-bordered square foot approach and have plants in 3 stages going all the time (just planted seedlings, re-potted plants up to about a 6" pot...

    Booby traps

I think that booby traps are a bad idea in a civilized society where there is law and order. But knowing how to make triggers, snares, and other types of common traps would be good information to have available. I have made a number of trip wire snares in the past and although they are simple...

    Garden 2024!

Questions about gardening and your calendar? I am terrible about starting plants too early. It occurred to me that I should be putting appointments on my e-mail calendar to remind me when I should be starting specific plants indoors or when I can safely move them outdoors, spring and fall plants...

    Garden 2024!

Just got off work, I hope to plant some okra in starter cups tonight. The outdoor garden is doing well, and I have an abundance of bees! All kinds of bees, I have seen at least 2 types of honey bees, carpenter bees, and an assortment of hornets and wasps. I guess my house has a abundance of...

Annoying theme songs that get stuck in your head!!

Here's one that drives my wife and kids crazy. Sometimes I just have to sing it!

    Garden 2024!

I counted 20 cucs on my indoor plants! Outside I see that my potatoes have broke ground and the boc-choy and beets are coming up. This year I have planted little bunches of green onions almost everywhere. I have some strawberries that made it through the winter, need to replant or feed them...

    What's everybody doing today?

Today the wind has been blowing 30+ MPH. Had to tie down my car tent as the fabric started to rip. Tried to work in the garden, but that wasn't working too well. Ended up doing dishes and laundry instead. I hope tomorrow things settle down so I can transplant my squash.

    I know nothing about Prepping

Trying to get back on topic of prepping. I think prepping is a very personal thing that requires looking at your self in the mirror and asking what could happen today that would really mess with my day and am I prepared for that... For me it was the little stuff at first, power outages, being...
