Walmart plans to charge you to use self checkout.

Really. Fox News today, 3/20/24, Walmart plans to require a $99 annual fee if you plan to use the self checkout. I don’t think this will go over well. It’s a great way to send business elsewhere.

    Check your vinegar

I saw this message on another forum, and thought I’d share. Might be helpful to some. I don’t think I might have noticed the ‘new’ label.

    Osburn stoves?

Time for a new woodstove, primary heat. Spouse wants an Osburn, a Canadian made stove. He really wants it because his brother just got one, but I’m not feeling it. Brother has had it less than a season. Does anyone have or know of these stoves? Can’t put my finger on it, but stainless with two...

    SOS medical advice for cat

Hi folks. I’ve got a situation here, and no vets to help. Have a kitten/young cat that seems to have a bullet wound in the neck. It’s been a bit, and now have an abcess. Just soaked with warm water and Epsom salts, and things are softening up. Question. Can I put pressure on, or even carefully...

    Got beef?

Summarized from several comments on LDS prepper posts on Facebook- the situations in Texas have farmers selling their cattle. No surprise to us there. Lines to the livestock auction were 3 miles long, hours of waiting, and not finished to 3 am. What caught my attention was that slaughterhouses...

    Canning supplies at Walmart, now

Check Walmart.com if you need any jars or lids. The prices have seriously dropped, 8.97 pints 12.97 half gallons, 2 something regular lids, etc. Not sure if it’s a sale, or production kicked in to our benefit. Prices are 5/12.

    What are your energy costs?

Someone on another forum asked how much it costs to run a dehydrator, so I pulled out a couple of electric bills to get an idea. General info says 10 cents an hour, but I was curious. Didn’t realize how much more the rates went up. In March, kWh was .06598 and in April .08149. Next month was...

    LDS Home Storage Centers

This morning I finally went to the local LDS center, where they have products for sale to the general public. The prices were surprisingly low. #10 can of carrots, 8.92 vs Augason at 42.99. Hard Red wheat at 5.68, about half of Augason, at 10.99. 9 cans, 3 containers of hot chocolate for $80...

The Real Anthony Fauci by RFK Jr

After I listened to the 11/16 interview of Robert F Kennedy on Hannity Today, I ordered a case of The Real Anthony Fauci to give to family and friends. Lots of information, and slow reading, but very well done. Not sure how well it will go over with some, but you can’t argue with facts. I’d...

    Good community

On Monday afternoon, a massive barn fire happened nearby. Many of the volunteers from the 12+ local departments were farmers or knew how to work heavy equipment. The animals were saved, and big round bales moved away to safety. Barn was a total loss, and the tractors and equipment lost. The...

Vintage Sun Pantry Fruit Dryer question

Good morning everyone! It’s a beautiful day to be putting away the harvest. I have a question for a more experienced person. I have a vintage fruit dryer, a wooden set-up with 4 aluminum screens. It is old and dry. Could this be used in a modern oven (electric) on low heat? My regular...

    Wrong. Just wrong.

Received a holiday gift guide, like a wish book, from Amazon today. What were they thinking? Not my heroes…

Local grocery store can not get one third of what they need.

I took a picture of the post, so I hope it is readable. This is a medium sized store that always goes above and beyond to provide for their customers. If they can’t get something, others sure can’t. We’ve heard of shortages of this and that, but one third of what they need or normally have? It’s...

    Dampness....

Too much rain recently has triggered some cleanup in the cabin (mold). Today’s response is a dehumidifier and fans. But, in another season, without power for those devices, what are options? I remember an old timer going to Agway, getting a bag of barn snow/ calcium chloride and hanging the...

Looks like a great resource here

I picked up a catalog at the Mennonite auction house yesterday, and thought many here might be interested too. PCBE, Plain Community Business Exchange, is a monthly magazine. I skimmed through this advertising supplement and it’s like Grainger, Lehman’s, the local farm store and Sears Roebuck...

    Keeping track of purchases

Just a thought, for anyone who doesn’t want a clear trail on what they’re buying. Number one of course is pay cash. Sometimes that isn’t workable. Using a gift card or prepaid card could give you more more privacy if someone were trying to keep track of who is accumulating what. This tip came...

    Gypsy moths

The gypsy moths caterpillars were pretty bad last month, but the moths! They’re thicker than mosquitoes ever thought of being. Besides squishing all that I can, I am planning to make up a spray, 1/2 cup lime and 3T dish soap to a gallon of water and spraying as much wood surface as I can this...

Why would a book disappear? Christopher Sign, Secret On The Tarmac

Last week the author of this book ‘committed suicide’. He was behind the story of Bill Clinton and Loretta Lynch. When I tried to list this book today, it appears to not exist. Google searches, eBay, and first attempt at Amazon show no such book. Really? Please tell me I’m overreacting. Edit-I...

    Groceries.... kind of sad...

I just sorted a box of government food, which is offered pretty liberally around here and in many parts of the country. I am thankful that it is offered, and it does help. What doesn’t suit one family can easily be shared with others who will enjoy it. I am not in any way, shape, or form...

Geothermal greenhouse- growing citrus in Nebraska!

I caught an article on Russ Finch of Alliance, Nebraska, who has been growing anything and everything in his geothermal greenhouse. It has become a business which has expanded to Canada and Europe. Greenhouse in the snow is the title of one segment. Maybe not many of us can afford to buy a...
