    Grills?

You are correct - adding wood chips in a propane grill is a thing.

    Grills?

Propane Gas Pros: Easy and fast to get cooking going. Controllable flame intensity/heat output gives good control over cooking speed, char vs internal cooking Cons: No wood/smoke flavor Charcoal Fire pit Pros: Pretty fast to get cooking (<20 minutes) especially if you use a charcoal starter...

    Concern about missing members

For most of human history, people could make uncontroversial small talk about the weather......but now the modern world is so messed up, that we can't even talk about the weather without it getting political.

    Concern about missing members

When people leave,,,,,they often have more than one reason. But busy people are less likely to leave and more likely to come back if they were not being hammered.

    Concern about missing members

......and this place (and maybe all the forums on the web) are likely to get worse in the lead up to the election........ We have had a big surge in new memberships/arrivals.......on one level that is a good thing......but on another it depends upon what those people are like and indeed who...

FRS/GMRS and MURS frequencies for emergencies?

Preparing for severe crises should include radios that can transmit offband.......but even possessing such a radio makes most Hams flip out. But that question really determines if the person involved is a ham that thinks that being so makes them a survivalist......and a survivalist that looks...

    Preparations Update

How were they packaged? Store packaging or mylar with oxygen absorbers?

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

It is actually pretty common for new members of survivalism forums, to tell everyone they are going to get all they need post-SHTF by scavenging. My problem with scavenging is: How do you tell what is abandoned from what is owned by someone still alive? What would you do to trespassers that...

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

....yes I thought that too when I was typing......but hanging out in a suburban house that doesn't stop bullets won't work either. That is not an area defense and being too short handed to make ambush work, takes that off the menu. As the suburbs go feral, there will be a lot of casualties on...

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

I assess that in a PAW, any suburban areas will most likely be no go areas for the rest of our lifetimes. There will always be some people left there and after a while they would all be apex predators......and MOUT (Military Operations in Urban Terrain) is traditionally the most costly...

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

15-20 years.........which in a post collapse world......is a long time. For many here in this thread, that is longer than their remaining life span (especially without modern health care) and in a very high risk environment. A lot of the people who want to revert to primitive tech sooner rather...

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

I have monocrystalline solar panels that have been in service for 25 years. I have spares and new ones that are yet to start degrading. I have some Engel fridges that have been working for more than 15 years.....I also have some quite new ones. I have AGM batteries that have been in service...

But I almost certainly will have it......because I have....like....prepared that capability. .....and nice has little to do with it.

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

What if you have to process the meat from a medium to large animal? What if you are drinking reconstituted powdered milk? What if you are catching fish? What if you are in a climate where food spoils quickly? There are primitive ways to do all the above......but most of those require a lot...

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

Yep. When the light is poor and the panels are struggling, the angle of incidence becomes critical too. At higher latitudes, in winter, everything is working against solar power.

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

Yep. One reason that I chose to put my backup solar capability on my camper rather than my house is that the camper trailer industry has developed the lowest power draw versions of pretty much all appliances. The other reasons are that in an emergency evacuation, my off grid solar power system...

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

12V DC. We had the option of 24 or 48V......but the Camper trailer has a lot of 12V appliances so we stuck with that. 140 amps will run the AC in the trailer on hot days (through a 12V DC 3000W mains inverter).

We talk of post crash and off grid, but what of refrigeration?

When you are engineering a solar power system, you need to address "what happens when you get bad weather for a week". In heavy overcast, good solar panels still produce about 10% of their rated full sun capacity. Large enough batteries will power low current devices for several days. Pick...

Is prepping dead? or just prepping forums?

The less elections affect you, the more "real world" a person you are.
