I would think if your fridge runs on fuel making a flame you could think of many home spun fuels that do the same. No fossil fuel needed.

Stocking up is a good starter book. Fox fire is a must have. Thousands of others where you learn a little here and a little there. Never enough books on how to do all kinds of old and new hands on things.
