    Water, how long?

Don't forget the potential for roof catchment, even here in the high desert. Between that, a hand-dug well plus a drilled well and a seasonal creek, I should be ok for minimal subsistence with good management, meaning storage. Off-grid already, so as long as batteries last for the wells, then...

What is your trigger to start rationing?

When costs rise is when to start rationing. Also when it becomes known that a shortage is imminent, like learning about the container bottleneck. Being on a fixed income, I'm rationing food & fuel to keep monthly costs more constant. No recreational target shooting from here on, as ammo is...

Post A Photo, A Real Photo

It's a desiccated jack rabbit I found lying on the ground so I propped it up against some dry vegetation for a photo. Not sure how it came to be dead, not eaten but sometimes there's a rabbit die-off around here and the coyotes don't eat them, probably because it happens at peak rabbit...

Adding solar to an old on grid homestead

Yes, I guess it's an illusion about the raised edges--good job! I leave my panels in a more winter-like angle, even in summer, mainly from being too lazy to bother flattening them as well as the fact that so much more power is produced in summer that it's a moot point if they're optimally...

Adding solar to an old on grid homestead

Nice rack! I like seeing different versions of wood racks. My neighbor built his with logs/poles. Only concern with yours is the difficulty getting snow off, with the raised edges.

    What Shortages are You Seeing?

I talked to the owner of our local grocery yesterday, complimented her on being able to keep the shelves stocked. She said some things are getting hard to get, but she substitutes when able to. We're at the extreme end of virtually all supply lines so our expectations are not too high...

    Weather in your area?

After our mini-blizzard night before last and frigid windy day, the wind calmed down overnight and today's low was 15F. Sunny this morning.

Best prices for 6 volt batteries?

I buy golf cart batteries at the local Les Schwab franchise. Not sure what brand they are, but the manager said there are only 3 battery manufacturers in the US, so are from one of those. They've lasted almost as long as the Trojan L-16s I had before, just need more of them, still less...

    Weather in your area?

First snow of this winter, overnight. About 1/2" is all, but it sets the mood. Nice fire in the wood stove this morning, hot coffee... Update evening: high 42, frigid wind all day.

    What Shortages are You Seeing?

Will never see that here because the nearest McDonalds is over 140 miles away.

    Old Kitchen Chair Project

Those are beautiful chairs! Hard to find chairs that nice anymore. I'd sell them to someone who likes them, then buy some new chars the color you like.

Storing/protecting cars in the country...had a snake in my car

Where I live in the desert the main problem is packrats/woodrats. They like to build nests on top of the engine. Solution has been to keep the hoods propped open on the trucks. Apparently this makes the nests vulnerable to owls, or maybe at least the rats think so. Snakes follow rodents, so...

    Favorite Movie Lines

From "My Cousin Vinnie" Mona Lisa Vito: "No, there's more! You see where the left tire mark goes up on the curb and the right tire mark stays flat and even? Well, the '64 Skylark had a solid rear axle, so when the left tire would go up on the curb, the right tire would tilt out and ride along...

Totally off grid yay or nay.

Well, I'm not super excited with using human manure anyway, but have lots of cow paddies.

Totally off grid yay or nay.

I think the concept of composting human waste is a combination of virtue-signaling and making extra work when you already have plenty to do on an off-grid homestead. If water is scarce, then a well-built conventional pit privy meets all needs with a day or so of work every few years (for moving...
