When I built my house I put down 3/4" oak floors. I finished them with a danish teak stain and poly.

I build a new master bedroom set and working on finish sanding when I can get away from my G/F; she knows I'm working on something, but dose not know what it is. I built everything out of maple and the keepsake/jewel box has maple burl draw fronts and side inlays.

I love dark wood finishes, but when we finished the pine dining room table and benches she wanted light stain. It looks OK to me, but will take more time to grow on me.

I don't want to ask her as it is her engagement surprise. We went furniture looking last week as she tells me how bad the current stuff is, but she was over overwhelmed with everything and did not get any hints.

I want to do a honey maple finish because I think it will bring out the grain better than a lighter finish. It would also give it a bit of a soft yellow hint.

How light would you go with a darker floor?

Wait. You know you're awesome to do that in the first place, right? I hope she's not hard to please. She prefers lighter then you go with that and I think it will look awesome with darker floor. PHOTOS, please, of your work, something, anything, or your finished project?
So you tried to drop hints at a furniture store? Why don't you ask her which one she prefers?
Honey maple finish is not dark, it is medium, isn't it?
If I were her, I'd be over the moon thrilled you made our furniture.

When I built my house I was living in a travel trailer. When I moved in I bought only furniture that were needed; recliner, 3 end tables, couch, bed on a metal frame, 2 night stands, TV stand, and a set of drawers.

She is not to hard to please. She also jumps into decisions before thinking about things at times.

I don't like to take pictures of my work as I am not able to look at my work the same way others do.

I think I'm going to go get a few sample stains tonight after work.

I woke up thinking that I still need to take her mattress shopping next week.

    For Pete's sake ask her!!!

Why go to all of that trouble to handcraft furniture just to find out years later she's always hated the finish and didn't want to hurt your feeling by telling you?!?!?!?!?

Tell her you are thinking about getting different furniture, you value her opinion and what color of finish would go best with the floor?

I love light pine floors and like the price too, besides our place is small so we need the lighter tones.
We have put wood floors in 3 different homes and all were pine but we couldn't afford the better woods. So far these floors are doing great.
I bet your floors are nice too. Good luck with tyour new life.

OK here is my take on this.
1 She knows you're working on something but doesn't know what it is.
2 You only work on it when she isn't around.
3 You took her furniture shopping and she said all the new stuff is bad.
4 She knows what's going on.:)
Like Lazy L said ask her.
If you really don't want to ask her then take her shopping again and this time watch her closely.
Her hint will probably be subtle but she will give you a hint.
Women sometime expect us to be a mind reader but with time and experience you can figure it out.
I've been married for 48 years and I expect to have her figured out in 30 or 40 more years.:D

My husband is the same way. That's why I take the pictures. I think he did an awesome job on our new house cabinets. Especially since he just learned how to make them.

I stained a 3 sample chunks of wood and will poly then for her to look at latter in the week.

When I took her furniture shopping she was going from room to room seeing one detail she did not like and off to the next room. Her main issues were queen bed over king and she did not like the modern hardware on a lot of the stuff she saw.

Lazy L. Bedrooms are just for getting dressed and being in bed. Beds are just for sleeping and making kids... Sorry I had to go there.

I'm all good if she dose not want what I built in the master bedroom. I can cut the head board to a queen for the guest room or sell everything and pick something out from a store.

After looking at the samples she wants the honey maple with a matte finish. She thinks she wants the walls in the bed room repainted, but I told her will deal with painting in a few months.

She talked me into letting her see everything. I hid her jewelry box from her. She did realize it was made for a king and not a queen.

I did a thinned coat of matte poly, sanded, and 2 coats of matte poly. Se hates the matte finish, but likes everything else. I spent my night sanding. I hope I can get everything finished and moved into the bedroom by Monday night.
