I saw this last night but couldn't really find any articles except CNN that told about it. I'm sure more are out there, probably being written now. What I am waiting to see is if martial law will be invoked.

New York is probably next, but I am quite sure, this will become common.

I have family in California who have said they've been told, stay home. I'll see if I can find the video where Newsom made the announcement. His delivery was odd.

There will be a press briefing from the White House at 11:45 a.m. today.
Any videos I find on California have commercials first.

Here it is.

California Becomes First State to Issue State-Wide Shelter in Place Order

Bradley Cortright March 19, 2020
2 Comments

Some 40 million Californians are being required to stay at home to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

“This is a moment where we need some straight talk, and we need to tell people the truth: We need to bend the curve,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said on Thursday night.

“In order to do that, we need to recognize the reality,” Newsom said, adding, “The experience that’s manifesting all across the United States — and for that matter around the rest of world — requires us to adjust our thinking and to adjust our activities.”

Newsome continued to note that some 23 million Californian residents are already under a stay at home order. He added that while the state is large, “there’s a mutuality and a recognition of our interdependence” that led him to determine it was appropriate for a state-wide stay at home order.

“We are confident that the people of the state of California will abide by it. They’ll do the right thing. They’ll meet this moment. They’ll step up as they have over the course of the last number of weeks to protect themselves, to protect their families, and to protect the broader community, and this great state, and the world that we reside in,” Newsom added.

The order will allow residents to go out to get food or prescription drugs. It will also allow workers in fields considered essential to go to work. But, everyone else is ordered to shelter in place.

Newsom’s order is now the strictest order aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus and comes after he warned that some 56% of the state’s population could become infected with the virus within the next eight weeks.

The order states that it will remain in effect “until further notice.”

I imagine liberal states will be the majority to go full lock down as they could care less about people's rights. Then some conservative states will, but at a slower 'we care about your rights but..." pace.

New York is a big step closer. All non-essential businesses are to close to the public. Either work from home or don't work. The idea is to keep people home, but that actual mandate hasn't been put out, yet. People are out and about.

Listening to people on ham repeaters today, people are more p!ssed off than I've ever seen. Everyone is talking about hitting the gun stores for another few thousand rounds. They're rightly furious with the politicians and they're extremely concerned what the repercussions will be over the short term when a lot of desperate people lose it.

New York was the second to shut down. See Sentry's comment above.

Yep, Ohio will shut down as of midnight tomorrow night. So there will be a run on non-essential stores tomorrow before it takes effect.
It's really only "kinda" shut down:

Ohioans ordered to #StayHome, sheltering-in-place to stop COVID-19 spread
By 700wlwMar 22, 2020

Governor Mike DeWine announced a "stay at home" order for all Ohioans, or more commonly known as "shelter-in-place" on Sunday afternoon, March 22.
Dewine says Dr. Amy Acton signed the health order that allows only essential businesses to stay open. Health officials and law enforcement will be enforcing the new order.

The stay home order will be in effect from 11:59 p.m. Monday until April 6, 2020. Dewine said his team will reassess the situation and determine if it needs to be renewed.
Dewine says "There is nothing in the order that we haven't already been talking about. There is nothing in this that I haven't been asking you to do for the last few weeks."
The order now makes these recommendations enforceable.

Here's what it means for all Ohioans.
1) Ohioans should all stay at home.
2) Nonessential workers should work from home.
3) Exceptions include: Leaving home for health and safety reasons, for obtaining necessary supplies and services, for outdoor activity, although playgrounds will be closed.
4) Leaving home to care for others is permitted, including family, friends and neighbors.
5) Ohio businesses that are deemed essential for us to live include gas stations, grocery stores, hospitals.
6) Any business that is permitted to stay open must follow good health protocol, including keeping workers six feet apart.

I live in PA, we are shut down. And my sister lives in Ohio. Also shut down. But pretty much nothing in either state is actually shut down except for bars, casinos, malls, and hair salons. No big gatherings. Restaurants are allowed to do take out. Banks have drive throughs. Not much else has changed.

I'm getting the feeling that we (as Americans) don't really know what shut down means. Hope we don't find out!

Our .gov shut Michigan down yesterday, effective at midnight.

I know of 2 people in the same area that were stopped this morning on their way to work.

It was repeated over and over that this wouldn't happen.

Can you say Papers Please?

New Mexico "shut down" this morning. My oldest was working part time at Dominos and got an email yesterday with a letter to keep with her saying she was "essential". Pizza delivery is essential?
Very essential, I know people that have no idea how to cook. I'll take my chances with my cooking :D

I agree. At some point we need to come up with better definitions. Shut down is very different than shelter in place which is very different than martial law, but right now depending on the state those terms seem interchangeable.

State by state map of status of each state. Education, school closings.

There is an interactive map that I cannot figure out how to post. Maybe someone else can figure it out. If not, you can click on each state to see what the status is.
