Why? WHY! Why do squirrels, having an entire forest surrounding them, choose to chew on my A/C wires and trailer wires instead of the tasty sticks and branches in the forest?

Are they warm when they're running? We had a packrat make a nest in our truck under the hood. It also chewed wires. The truck had been sitting for two weeks.
OK. This all sounds like a conspiracy the wiring makers have going with the makers of things that have wire so that we have to buy new stuff, because the wire is liked by small animals.

Some random reading from around the web. I know this has been an issue for years but seems to be getting more prevalent these days.

It's entertainment for them. Watch the humans throw a fit when the a/c doesn't workWhy? WHY! Why do squirrels, having an entire forest surrounding them, choose to chew on my A/C wires and trailer wires instead of the tasty sticks and branches in the forest?
No, both the trailer wires and A/C wires were chewed over the winter. The A/C electronic control area was filled to capacity with dry grass and one fried red squirrel. I assume the fan/condenser capacitor shocked the critter to death. Are they warm when they're running? We had a packrat make a nest in our truck under the hood. It also chewed wires. I bet auto repair people love that stuff.
Conspiracy theorie.
Mothballs are your friend. At the old place, we had packrats, just dirty squirrels... I kept a can of mothballs under the hood of both trucks and parked them over a pie pan that had mothballs in it. No problem if I remembered to take care to keep the supply in place. (Mothballs evaporate eventually)
Great idea! Knew someone who used lemon halves!Nevada, my neighbor said she uses moth balls for her parked RV,no rats or squirrles.
