As bad as the Pinto was, it wasn't as bad as the Chevy Vega:

With hardened-aluminum cylinder bores, when the pistons wore thru into the regular aluminum, it was 'Game Over'.
They would start using oil like crazy and smoking and there was no 'fix'.
Lots of dedicated lifetime Chevy owners were rudely introduced to the concept of the "cheap 5-year disposable car".

GM couldn't bury that disaster fast enough.
It turned a lot of Chevy guys into Ford owners.

They were a POS. Same as the Vega.
But a guy that used to be in the car club I ran around with had a Pinto. He stripped it down and install a Ford 9" read end, Top Loader 4 speed, behind a built 289. It was quick in the 1/4 mile. I saw it hop over a beer bottle leaving the line once.

You ought to see what a vega does with a 327 in her. Gives new meaning to buckle up.

Yep. Both of them were only wortha crap when rebuilt with 10 year old parts form when cars were worth having.
