There are times when I want to give up and go back to my old life. Do you ever think or say that? I have those moments when I am stressed and want an easier life. Than common sense or the Holy Spirit comes onto me and reminds me that it is NOT easier by a long shot! I do feel safer here even though during hunting season I am uneasy that one of us or our animals will get shot, by accident of course, but we are surrounded by the state forest.

It is also much cheaper and less interference by others here. We can basically do what we want or so far we can and have. After hunting season is over, if there is not much snow, it will be very quiet day and night till spring. If there is snow, snowmobiles will be here since our road is listed as a snowmobile trail. Last year I think one day only had a few snowmobiles. We had snow though.

I have a country place and am surrounded by timber land. Unfortunately I am not here full time yet but spend every glorious weekend here. It's not perfect
I have two neighbors within 100 acres of me and pieces of the timber land are hunt club but they bother me almost never. I hunt too so I get it.
The trip home every week even to the smallish town I spend the week in reminds me of the blessing my acreage in the country is. God willing and the creek don't rise I'll be here full time in 4 years:lil guy:

There are so many people now that finding secluded property is hard unless you do move to hunting land. I grew up in a hunting family but living in it was a new experience for me. The state forest here is used for other recreation as well as hunting. The Finger Lakes Trail system goes around our property too, but those hikers are pretty quiet. I love the forest though. There is something special about it.

I used to do the long stressful hours of city living. . . working 6 days a week anywhere between 45-75 hours. We still have to work hard on our little place in heaven but this kind of life is more rewarding to me at least. There's just something about raising and growing your own food that brings satisfaction. Its disappointing when crops fail here for whatever reason. I look at all that hard work and hours put into it with no or little reward, but then I know there is always next time. Always a learning experience and I'm too stubborn to ever give up because of one set back. One step back but two steps forward.

We have a family farm and on that farm is a "private" lake with a secluded grassy and sandy beach area. There is however a small dirt road that leads up to it from a gravel road. And while we have numerous game cams up and signs that say "private" and "no trespassing" that does not stop people from showing up. That's just the way some people are. And it is very unnerving when you expect to be in the private confines of land you own and a car full of unauthorized people come rolling in wearing swimsuits or just out being nosy. I can imagine that is even more unnerving when you live in the country full time.

We just probably lost some of our crops in the GH from cold. But that is how it goes you win some you lose some. All that hard work pays off in the long run though. I get stir crazy out here in the woods but don't want to live in the city either.

Hurry up Dutch,
I did it in 2001, and aint never regretted it,

It took me a year to wind down and get a hold on the slower life.

Kat, I do get a yernin to visit the old life once in a while...but when I get back to my farm...
no doubt I'm at the right place.

Not quite the country but two years ago we moved from city of more than a million to an acre in a town of 2000 surrounded by millions of acres of forest, 1 1/2 hour drive to nearest city of 90000 and 5 hour driv3 to major city. Would never go back
Around here 90,000 IS a major city. The COUNTY we are retiring to has a population of 3,000.

Sounds about like where we live. I cringe when I think we might never have gotten out of the city and started over in areas with lesser populations.

I can't imagine going back to the City. I live 9 or 10 Miles outside of a small Town of less than 3000. I live in the Woods, surrounded by National Forest, There is no Traffic, Trains, or Crowds of People. In the Winter I Love the absolute Quiet, broken only by the Calls of the Owls, and the Howls of Coyotes. The Forest is where I find Comfort and Solace, and the Bird, Animals, and Insects are my Friends. Because of my Health Issues I have to spend more time in Town, where I feel Naked, and Uncomfortable, and I can't wait to get back to the Solitude and Quiet.

Dang, I thought someone was trying to get my attention. Thanks, UJ, for sending me the link to this forum. It looks like most of the old crowd is here.

We currently live in a small country town of 1000 on a 1/2 acre around 5 mins out of town but when we build in a few years we will be moving to a town of about 100 people. We love the seclusion and country life and would never go back to a big city like we came from with all the rat race and traffic and aggression.

I would emphasise too we keep good stores of food, medications and other things and only go grocery shopping once every 6 weeks as our town can and does get cut off by flood waters.

I grew up country living. Moved to near a city in CT for a few years. Made me want to blow my brains out. Moved back to nh, back to my woods. Feel much better! Raising my family here is the only way in my book. Spent all night on a mountain in the woods making snow felt completely safe, then the people started showing up. That's my cue to go back to my woods.

So you live in NH? Don't know why I thought you were an Aussy.

Yup Nh born and Nh proud. Live free or die, my state's motto. I don't know why you thought that either....

Always wanted to visit there but never made it past Mason Dixie line. I like the Atlantic Ocean so most trips are Florida keys snorkling or fishing, but they are not the same like everything else. I wanted to go to Gloucaster 'spl' to the little bar The Crows Nest Billy and friends frequented. The Perfect Storm crew. On the bucket list but probably won't happen .

Got it mixed up with the Wrens Nest in Atlanta. Uncle Remus and Bere Rabbit.
