I can’t remember where I heard this, but it was long before I was a Boy Scout. It has served me well over the years. I don’t know how ‘famous’ it is, but it is to me.
“White man builds a big fire and stands far away. Indian builds a small fire and stays close.”
It is relevant in so many situations. Small fires take less fuel, so less foraging. Draws less attention as it can be more discrete. All you really need for heat is a log or rock to start a small fire against and something to reflect it back at your back. And for cooking, a small pile of coals and enough to replace them as they burn out.
