Has to be CCI, Mini Mag or Stinger.
I have stockpiled and use:
.22 Long Rifle
ELEY Tenex 40 grain FN... 1085 fps @ muzzle / 935 fps @ 100 yards
CCI Mini-Mag 40 grain CPRN...1235 fps @ muzzle / 998 fps @ 100 yards
Remington Golden Bullet 40 grain BPHP... 1255 fps @ muzzle / 1017 fps @ 100 yards
Federal Champion 36 grain CPHP...1260 fps @ muzzle / 1000 fps @ 100 yards
During the "shortage" I also was able to scrounge up huge amounts of ...
.22 Long Rifle
Winchester 555 36 grain CPHP...1280 fps @ muzzle / 975 fps @ 100 yards
Federal American Eagle 38 grain CPHP...1260 fps @ muzzle / 1010 fps @ 100 yards
GECO Optimized for Bolt Action Rifles 40 grain LRN...1082 fps @ muzzle / 955 fps @ 100 yards
CCI Maxi-Mag 40 grain TMJ...1875 fps @ muzzle / 1366 fps @ 100 yards
CCI Maxi-Mag 40 grain JHP...1875 fps @ muzzle / 1319 fps @ 100 yards
CCI High Velocity 29 grain CPRN...1215 fps @ muzzle / 908 fps @ 100 yards
CCI High Velocity 29 grain CPRN...1080 fps @ muzzle / 857 fps @ 100 yards
So...to answer the question: CCI Mini Mags and ELEY Tenex
I like a few flavors and have a decent amount of various .22 put away. Federal Automatch, Remington Golden Bullet, and CCI standard are all good shells, but I just topped off my .22 ammo cache with over 5K of Mini Mags (my favorite) for a rainy day.
This is a great deal right here... $350 for 5000 rounds.
CCI Standard Velocity is my old faithful
Lapua Midas+, Center-X. I have had some good lots of RWS R-50. In the ammo cabinet there is a lot of other stuff I dont shoot, CCI SV, Remington goldens,Federal AM, Agulia, Armscor, Fiocchi, and probably some other stuff If I were to look.
CCI is my favorite.
I use CCI mostly !..................
CCI 36 grain HP Mini Mag for my 10/22 squirrel rifle.
Fed 36 grain HP bulk pack (550 round) for my Single Six.... Crazy accurate in that gun.
Win 36 grain HP bulk pack (555 round) for 'plinking' with the 10/22.
Whatever I have on hand... Haven't found any Win, CCI or Hornady Mags that the Single Six doesn't like.
I don't have a favorite, whatever my particular gun likes is fine with me. Have used Federal,Remington Gold bullet,Winchester Super X,Mini mags,Stingers.,round nose and hollow points and even shotshells...all are fine with me. But I do prefer hollow points for hunting in most cases, depends on the quarry and my mood.
I shoot Federal Bulk Pack .22LR from a supply I bought in 2004-2006. They were 550 rounds for $8.99 at Wal-Mart, so I stocked up. I don't shoot a LOT of 22, but when I do, it is for fun/plinking/practice, so I'm not too concerned about the "quality" as long as it feeds well through my firearms.
I still have a few of these stashed away. I had bought 10 boxes back in 2008 on sale at Cabelas for $15 each. Gave away several during the “.22 famine” to friends with kids who couldn’t find any. Great ammo!
Good post! For sure, we can buy what we like, but the firearms will ultimately choose what they prefer!
I've favored CCI for quite a spell now, and shot whatever was at hand. I think Squirrel likes hollow-points because he's getting too old to guarantee headshots nowadays.
You're right to a point but I never did guarantee head shots even though I always was good a it,but sometimes the squirrels don't cooperate
Let most folks in here, I gotta go with the CCI. I prefer hyper velocity or anything 1400 FPS or higher!
Same here. I particularly like the 40 gr. CCI Velocitors at 1435 fps.
Buzzin is correct in that my 22 Bersa Thunder will not function correctly using "subsonic or standard" (1125 fps or less) velocity ammo. Even high velocity (1200 fps) ammo will cause it to have periodic hiccups!
If I put "hyper speed or hyper velocity" ammo or anything over 1400 fps, it shoots flawlessly!
This appears to be intentional or by manufactures design.
CCI is my go to and what I shoot the most of.
My 10/22 target rifle and new American Rimfire Target both make me look good if I feed them
Eley TenEx. Bought a brick of Aguila Rifle Match Competition because a buddy swears by them, and they were good, but not as good as the Eley.
But what I have the most of is the Remington Bucket of Bullets Golden Bullet 36 grain hollow point. During the drought, a friend who owned a gun shop would sell me and a few others a bucket every time he got a shipment in. Every body else bought them in 100 count baggies. My reward for spending so much in his shop. Not my favorite, but they were available. I probably bought more 22 during that time period than I have during the rest of my life!
Have 3 lots, 2 boxes of each, of Midas + coming today for testing. With the rain and ice might be a couple days before I can shoot it.
I always had good luck with Super X 40 gr. HP. I got about 1200 of those stashed. Also got 2,200 Golden Bullet HP, about 1k American Eagle 38 gr HP, 3 boxes of Win. 555s, and 900 Mini Mags. I also got about 750 rounds of miscellaneous stuff like Stingers, Aguila, and that Filippino made .22 HP that I can never remember the name of...
Finished up testing the 3 lots of Midas + this morning. 42 and no wind. I ordered 2 bricks of the best one, will ship Monday.
My CZ rifle prefers RWS 50, CCI Standard, Norma Match. My 10/22 likes Aguila Pistol/Rifle Match; no subsonics. Winchester 77 shoots anything except subsonics.
Also like the high velocities, but I get tired of having to adjust my scope elevation between different velocities. At 50 yards, the Stingers were hitting 5 inches higher than a standard.
I just clicked that link and it was $375 free shipping.
CCI for serious shooting.
I usually judge .22 rimfire ammo by what it can or can not do in my best , most accurate/consistent rifles (CZ 453,Ithaca X15 Lightning).
There are 2-3 brands that really standout for me in that rifle...
#1 being SK Rifle match.
#2 Eley Match EPS
#3 Wolf Match Extra
These 3 brands are so close in all areas of testing...and all are below 1100fps, actually I could go with either one.
Quality ammo makes a difference ..
Order from here on a regular basis .
For shooting pop cans or just plinking fun ....almost any of the off the shelf bulk stuff is ok ,Winchester, Remington, CCI, etc.
Back in the 1970's while deer and elk hunting in Colorado we had a Ruger .22 pistol, six inch barrel with fixed sights, I used CCI Stingers in it and it was amazingly accurate, I shot a lot of Grouse through the neck at distances of 50 feet or less, actually sorry to say I sold it, but I wanted to have one in stainless steel to handle the damp climate out here in Oregon. These days I mainly use Federal, then CCI, Remington and Winchester. Remington has seemed to improved on the powder used and they seem much cleaner burning than they used to be. A lot of what I have has to do with how hard it's been to even get .22 ammo and it's only gotten better in the last few years and thankfully .22 Bricks are coming back.
