Homemade vanilla - vodka, rum or bourbon?

I can't think of a better group to ask than this one.

Most folks have recommended inexpensive, unflavored vodka for making homemade vanilla extract. But some folks swear by rum and/or bourbon. What do you all recommend?

We typically use a good quality vodka for ours. Done that for years. Just on a whim I made a small batch with the Brandy I like. It turned out VERY well. Never hurts to experiment with something new. Never know, it might be garbage you pour out. But might find a winner as well.

I use 100 to 190 proof vodka. If you have enough vanilla beans, and want the additional flavours, then rum etc. would be fine. Some things would do well with a rum flavour but many wouldn't.

I just use vodka for mine. I’ve tried expensive and cheap and no one seems to know the difference At some point I may try rum just for fun but so far it’s just vodka here.

I would agree with the rum flavor not working for some stuff. Our Brandy vanilla wouldn't either.

I've used vodka and rum. Hot chocolate with just a splash of the vanilla rum... Yum!

I have never made it , only used store bought. But I see you have lots here who have.

Anyone tried Crystal Head Vodka, Dan Ayhroyd brand. It is wheat free.

We use bourbon INSTEAD of vanilla.
