I'm wondering if anyone has experience in incubating eggs & brooding chicks without electricity? I know a broody hen could be used, but what other alternatives are there? I'm especially interested for my quail, which never get broody.

Online I've seen that in the past kerosene lamps used to be used for both purposes, with the eggs turned by hand daily. Anyone have any experience/insights with this?

My grandma used to hatch using the kerosene lamp method, but she had to turn the eggs.
Turning the eggs isn't that big of a deal. I have two incubators going right now, and I have to rotate it three times a day. Except let them sit at three days before hatching.
So basically, you need something to add some humidity, and you need to keep your eggs at just under 100 degrees, and they need to be rotated 3 times a day. If you can simulate that with something else, not a problem.
