Yep, I'm too old and ,too many health issues,(knees, back, bad heart), to to any strenuous exercise,
Heck, even walking too much is not tolerable.

But I can keep my weight in Check..
I'm holding at 220 lbs, which is healthy, and fit for my 6'3" frame.

I do it 99 % by healthy eating.(Keto)

I do walk some, :lil guy:and do a little manual (smart)labor.

I actually feel pretty good, and energetic..
Ya know...the mind says...:green man:go for it... body say's ....are you crazy?:dunno::angie:

I have read and heard that walking three miles a day is highly recommended for good health. I have tried for that, but it comes and goes, depending upon life's demands. I do have an 85 year old uncle and his wife who walk minimally 3 miles a day, and sometimes up to 5. They have both had knee replacements, and then got right back out there as soon as they could.

When 2 daughters kids were younger they came here every summer since both parents worked and I cooked good for them meals and bad for me. I ate too much and over 10 years gained 25 extra pounds. I got on my bike and on these dirt roads it is a workout! Rode for miles every day. Now I'm ok and eat alot les since meals are not as big. I also didn't touch bread for over 3 years,my favorite. I'd bake biscuits cornbread for hubby or company but not me.

Exercise is key to keeping weight off, and for maintaining health. So many older people are stuck, sitting on the couch, doing little. Staying active is key.

Bread can be a challenge for me. I like to grind some wheat into flour, use some white flour and make bread. Once I start down the path of eating bread, I have a steep slope to get back up and off of it.

Me too! Especially in the mid section. I eat fattening foods but in small portions and all day off and on so it seems to work for me.

I LOVE making baking and eating sourdough! It is undoubtedly the absolute best bread in the world. Unfortunately I am a "spontaneous hypoglycemic" which means that as soon as any kind of starch or sugar is ingested my body produces a lot more insulin than it needs to digest the sugars properly. If I am not VERY active it gets converted into fat for later use. Before my accident and associated back issues I used to walk 14 miles a day. and I was active most of the time. Over the last twelve years or so I have gained a lot of fat. I was up to 210 pounds and for a guy who is 5'10" with a small frame, that is at least 40 pounds too much. I have lost about 24 pounds in the last 2? months on the KETO plan. It's not a diet for me but the way I should have been eating my whole life. I miss the bread and on days like today (7F rising to 13F) I miss my hot cocoa too. but It is definitely worth it to get back to my "fighting" weight. I can walk about a mile and a half before my back tells me to stop but I plan on increasing the strength in my back as I lose the fat. I have added two holes to my belt to keep my pants on and have sworn not to buy new clothes until I am under 170 pounds. Most of the fat I lost is from my belly but I have also lost it in my chest, legs and "hips".

Yes that stubborn belly fat is always the last to go. Glad that works for you and good luck.

Weight and the storage of excess body fat is diet and hormone related. One can easily lose weight without exercise and at the same rate as they would if they added in normal amounts of exercise. We burn off far more energy at rest and while going through our daily lives than we do by exercising. Fasting will do 10x more for weight loss than exercise will as well. You can run for 30 minutes and burn off 250 calories or you can skip a meal and save 700-800+ calories. Doing nothing always trumps having to do something for us humans. Plus fasting helps keep our hormones in check, which have a lot to do with how our body regulates digestion and the processing of food.

Now, I should add that am very pro exercise. It is essential for good cardiovascular health and physical strength. It is also helpful in keeping yourself from gaining that extra weigh, muscular health, bone health, overall endurance, etc. The benefits of exercise are great, but weight loss is not really one of them unless you eat a very high carb / low fat diet and plan on putting in several hours a day of aerobics.

Fat comes off our body in the reverse order it comes on. If the last stored body fat was on your belly, that is the first place fat will be consumed. We also have both visceral body fat and subcutaneous. Visceral is around our organs and subcutaneous is on top of muscle and beneath skin. Men tend to burn visceral first and women tend to burn subcutaneous first. The visceral is what can cause health issues but the subcutaneous changes how we look and our clothing sizes. Either way losing any excess body fat will improve you health, energy, etc.

Mid fiftys , I have a large bone structure, and have always been able to build muscle easily, but every winter I would always gain 10 or so pounds, which i would normally loose in spring, but as I got older I would gain a bit more loose a bit less. went on several diets, eating life styles, which would often help for a while, I also had muscle stiffness problems, not really cramping, just not really releasing, This summer i decided to give Keto a try, to be honest I was skeptical, but this time last year I was 260# , yesterday 190# and I feel way better, My sister started in mid to late october and she has lost at least 20# and looks way healthier, Her friend who is a dietician says no way keto can work, but in my brother in law's words "Her a$$ (the dietician) is three times as wide as his wifes (my sister ) "

I have a friend who is some kind of college educated professional exercise coach and weight loss specialist at a local health & fitness center. He is in amazing shape, has never been over weight and pushes the low fat + exercise + exercise + exercise system of weight loss. We used to debate the merits of keto and the un-importance of exercise in weight loss. That's when I asked him for some before and after pics of all his success stories. He looked puzzled and could not seem to produce any. Many of his clients are slimmer than when they started but very very few of them have had any kind of night and day transformation. Now the community room where the keto-support group meets (that my wife was a member of for several months when she started out on keto) has dozens and dozens of before and after pics on the wall of incredible almost miraculous transformations. I got him to go there with me and check 'em out. He did a ton of research and switched to keto himself and for his clients. He now has a success board hanging at the health & fitness center.

I guess I am a success story in the making. From 210 to 174 in about two months. I have a bit more to go before I will be happy and then I will start working on endurance. I don't want to build muscle just tone up and get my stamina back. The big hurdle there will be my back. I just have to work gradually to keep from (re) injuring myself.

I have been a regular weight lifter since high school and always concerned about my physical conditioning (goes hand in hand with my career field). I have never been overweight and started keto to support my wife who wanted to drop the baby weight and was also concerned about my potential for diabetes. She was able to return to her weight in college when she swam on a collegiate team in a considerably short period of time. While I expected to lose nothing as I was already in good shape, I was surprised to find that I dropped 15-20lbs in the first couple months. Presumably mostly visceral fat around on my organs. When done properly keto seems to always create success stories.

Hey , my cardiologist gives me Lasik , said take one when I feel like it.

I take one , once a week, for congestive heart failure.... maybe twice a week sometimes.

When I do.... I lose 4lbs that day and it makes me feel good.

Jim

I have a water pill I take once in awhile. Hubby says he thinks I have heart problem my breathing is getting worse. I think it is over 50 years of smoking. Had COPD fro a couple decades now.

I don't take any meds except water pill now and then. I may try one today and see if my breathing improves.

Age needs a little fat to protect what few muscles we have but we also need those muscles. So wonder if I did part KETO I'd gain more muscle and not lose fat that I have little of ?

Also women need some fat to supply estrogen they lose after menopause.

Your body will not let you lose the fat you need to for healthy and survival without legitimate starvation conditions combined with malnutrition. However doing keto is the most effective dietary plan for increasing muscle mass as it both provides copious amounts of essential proteins/aminos it also controls blood sugar and other hormones which hinder muscle growth. Add fasting into the mix and you can also increase your production of HGH and testosterone (more predominantly in men) to build even more muscle.

When my wife finished having children she used keto to drop her weight down to her "college weight" and then even lower. For the most part without exercise or at least not any more exercise than she normally did to maintain her weight (swimming 2-3 times a week for 30 minutes). She then used keto, swimming (2-3x a week for 30 min) and weight training (2-3x a week for 30-40 min) to add additional muscle mass.

I have not been doing as much digging and wheelbarrowing as I was a couple years ago. and I don't care for meat anymore much because of the way they fill them up with all kinds of poisons and hormones. Can't afford organic, too busy making huge mistakes ' camper last one' ,lol.
I could complete hugelkultur mound later on. It needs a few dozen wheelbarrows on it. Not going to happen anytime soon, if ever.

I went off keto over the holidays. I was traveling and stayed with my folks for three weeks so other peoples homes and restaurants for several weeks, I just wasn't up to the effort. I watched my carbs a little but very little. Surprisingly, When I got back from the trip I'd lost a few pounds. They must have been in my luggage because I seem to have found some of them. Tomorrow (Monday) I go back on keto so today is my last day of sin so I'm taking advantage of it.

While on keto I lost weight, had better blood sugar readings, and reduced my diabetic meds. I also reduced my pain meds. The knee pain I understand but I was surprised how much the back has improved.

I have lost 67 lbs since July 2017, by counting calories, weighing food, logging everything I eat and drink, cutting way back on salt and added sugar, and exercise. I was motivated to change my lifestyle and get healthy because of double bypass surgery to fix blocked arteries. The effort has been worth it, my cardiologist was very happy at my progress in December. My wife (Iluvgoats) is committed to the same path to good health, and we push each other to succeed.

That is awesome. Having a supportive partner makes it much easier.
