Lost, stolen and found quilts

There are web sites dedicated to helping people find their lost and stolen quilts, and in the process, people find quilts that they try to return to a family member who might have been passed over to receive a quilt. This is just one site that is about lost quilts: http://lostquilt.com BTW, quilts have been recovered with the sharing of stories, and that is why I thought a thread here would help in the process.

There are many stories of quilts that have been stolen from quilt shows. There are stories of quilts being sent to someone and being lost in shipment, or stolen from the front door.

I have never personally had a quilt stolen or gone missing. I have made quilts and can understand how it is not just stealing a quilt, but 100's of hours from someone's life, the person who makes quilts.

This story is of a quilt that was found in a thrift store. It is possible that whoever had this quilt no longer wanted it, or they died and the people cleaning out their home didn't see any value in keeping it.

‘Incredible’ quilt stolen from Tillamook fabric shop

Jane’s Fabric Patch sometime between Saturday and Monday morning, owner Jane Wise told KOIN 6 News.

It’s a stunning piece of work from a woman, Kathy Morrison, whose business includes doing longarm quilting for others.

Morrison was at a quilting retreat Thursday when KOIN 6 News spoke with her by phone. She began quilting about 11 years ago and loves it. Morrison said her favorite thing to do is make quilts for children and donates them to the Tillamook Police Department.

Her quilt was hanging on the wall just inside the front door of Jane’s Fabric Patch to showcase what she can do. The shop also carries the fabric panel used to make it.

Wise, who has owned the shop for 37 years, said there are surveillance cameras. But in this case, the wall where the quilt was hanging is just out of view.

“It was right up there by the front door, so it was easy for someone,” she said. “In fact, when it was first hung there I thought, ‘Oh, that doesn’t look like a good thing.’ You always have confidence in people but somehow they were able to just snag it. Out the door they went.”

The quilt of a dahlia is a panel about 40 inches square, Wise said. It has a wool batting in it “so it’s nice and puffy.” There’s a back on the quilt, as well.

“She layered it and did incredible quilting on it.”

“They probably want to sell it, make some money would be my guess,” Wise said. “It is a valuable piece because of the way she quilted it. So that’s the sad part about it.”

In the meantime, she said they’ll re-direct their surveillance cameras.

Wise said it would be nice to somehow get the quilt back and return it to the quilter — and she hopes all the attention on social media will encourage the thief to do the right thing.

I hate theives! I think it's awful that someone would take such a thing. I check these sites out every so often in case I happen upon one. It's so sad.
