Meerkat, do you have an extension office near you? Usually they are located in the county seat. They can help you evaluate your soil and give you some advise about what you need to do to improve your garden's productivity. Soil is different from one place to another. It all needs to be treated differently. Pot ash might work for you, but it may not, depending on your soil's needs.

Weedy your correct about soil, after so many ammwndments and compostit had to have changed,plus past few years we got away from gardening,so just now getting back to it.
I need to get some samples together and take them to be tested. I did have some pretty good kits but used them up.
