Midland X-tra Talk Walkies

Yesterday I found two handheld walkies in a long term storage box. I have no idea when I bought them or why... They were out of their packaging with no owners manual. They have never been used or had batteries installed (3AAA batteries) I downloaded the proper pdf manual from Midland. I installed batteries in one of them to see the display screen.

They are Midland X-tra Talk LXT110/80 Series GMRS/FRS Radio

Small hand held walkies... They have 22 channels and a Vox function, not sure what the vox function does.

Can anyone tell me about them? a general rundown?

Vox is voice actuated. When Vox is activated you don't have to push the transmit button.

I found the following ominous warning in the owners manual...

The LXT110/80 Series operates on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service)
frequencies which require an FCC (Federal Communications Commission)
license. You must be licensed prior to operating on channels 1 - 7 or 15 - 22,
which comprise the GMRS channels of the LXT110/80 Series. Serious penalties
could result for unlicensed use of GMRS channels, in violation of FCC rules, as
stipulated in the Communications Act's Sections 501 and 502

GMRS licensing requires no exam but costs $70 to get and it's good for 10 years. Here's what Midland's site has to say: https://midlandusa.com/why-do-i-need-a-gmrs-license-how-do-i-get-it/. I know a lot of people who use GMRS who don't have licenses. But they're not using it often or for business.

These walkies were in a container with emergency prepping gear... things I won't use until shtf... Doubt I'll get a license. If I need these walkies I doubt there will be anyone complaining.
