would love to see stricter animal cruelty laws with more punishment.
Sorry but I am 100% against that. I sure do not believe in allowing animal cruelty but everyone seems to have a different opinion about that.
If your 22 year old horse that you love gets sick or injured and is obviously going to die so you shoot it. Is that animal cruelty? In most places the answer is yes.
If your barn cat has another litter of kittens that you sure are not going to feed so you knock them all in the head. Is that animal cruelty? In most places the answer is yes.
If your farm dog is at the end of its life and is in pain so it it time to put it down yet you know it is against the law for you to kill it so you finally manage to get the dog into your car (where its never been) and the dog is terrified all the way into town on that ride, then you get to the vet and you have to get physical with the now thoroughly terrified dog to get it into the vet building. Next you leave the dog in the small cage until the vet can euthanize the dog all the while the dog is shaking in fear. Is that animal cruelty? In every place the answer is no.

Is it right that one doctor can legally kill countless unborn babies and sell the body parts for profit while you can go to jail for humanely shooting your own pet when it is at the end of life?

I don't like the thought of people eating pets. The reality of pound animals is that some get adopted, some get drained of their blood to transfuse someones pet, and the rest get an injection to end their life. As uncomfortable as I am with someone adopting a dog to eat it is better than injecting it with poison and hauling it to the dump.

:I agree:

I know that this would not be easy to define, and that is why there are not laws for animals like there are for people, except for unborn babies. There are so many examples that it would be hard to draw a line in the sand about it.

I agree with hiwall. While I don't plan on eating dogs, cats, rats or horses I don't think it should be a crime. I've had people get irate with me because I wouldn't sign their anti horse processing plant petition. They didn't care what my reasons were and tried to get our local livestock inspector to sieze my horses, simply because I didn't agree with them. You'd also have to legally define EXACTLY what is and isn't a pet.

One more in a long line of confirmations that a disturbing percentage of city folks who move to the country - are damfools.

Vermont is such a little place, and so many city folks have moved here, or live here to the extent that they have established residency, that there is hardly any countryside anymore. A politically overwhelming mob of Socialist Suburbanites.

Several years ago I was working in Maui. There was a story on the news where some local Filipino people went to the pound and adopted a black dog.
Later that day a woman from the pound happened to drive by their house and the dog was hanging in a tree bleeding out. It was a big ruckus and they were given a ticket for animal cruelty. I left before it was settled so I don't know what happened to the dog eaters.
Every day when my friend asked where we were going for lunch I said not to the black dog place. He was a Filipino.

My socialist uncle is in Vermont. Been there most of his life.

I have never had a good experience with adopting an animal from a shelter. Either they lied about it's temperament and a child was bit or they lied about it's health and it infected other animals in my home or died. I will never adopt again. Humane Society... what a farce.

I have had Philippinos try to buy my black lab to eat in Hawaii.

My daughter in law ran a supposedly no-kill shelter. She really loves animals and she was really good at her job there of promoting the place and finding funding in their city. Finally though there was just too many things that she didn't like and now she moved to different job.
Shelters across the nation kill millions of pets every year. Yes millions. Tell me again just how humane that is.

My daughter, a very young adult, decided to adopt a dog from the shelter. She saw a dog that she liked on their website, and evidently many others wanted it as well, but somehow, she got it. The dog had diarrhea for the 3 months she had it. Too many vet visits and medication for the early 20's, poor, busy and very social girl. She finally returned the dog to the shelter. It really ruined her for adopting from shelters. That was how she ended up getting her first Ridgeback, from a breeder, for Christmas, from her boyfriend.
There are too many animals put down every year, but there is a growing group of dog owners. Almost everyone thinks they "need" a dog. Many are ill equipped with knowledge, patience, and time.

Some shelters make it too difficult to adopt. Premise inspections, references, adoption fees that cost more than just buying a dog and then you don't actually "own" the dog. If you can't care for it you can't give it away. Even to a family member. By contract it has to go back to the shelter so they can charge someone else the "fees" all over again.

There was a standard poodle cross we wanted for my daughter at a shelter in the next town, it was cheaper and less hassle to drive more than twice the distance to buy the Lab pup.

My SIL took in a stray that was roaming around the hospital where she worked. Animal control found out and took the dog away from her so the owners could claim it, so they said. The next day they called her and said the owners changed their minds and she could come and get the dog. They charged her $250.

I'd have left it.

A Chinese restaurant we had eaten at a few times when they first opened was shut down quite a few years later because the health department inspector found frozen cats in the freezer. The stray cat population had decreased dramatically.
We had quit eating there because we heard other negative things.
There's another local place, Mexican food carry-out, the meat is very suspicious. Reminds me of Chinese chicken, which is probably dog or cat.

With the proper seasoning and a lack of knowledge anything can taste wonderful.
Chicken fingers made from rattle snake comes to mind. So does burgers made from worms.
It all tastes good when you don't know what is in it.

There is a reputation of some Chinese restaurants serving dogs and cats. There was a Chinese restaurant in my neighborhood, in the course of a conversation with someone about the place, they said, "No, thank you. I don't eat dog or cat." It may be true in some places, but I can't imagine this is true for all. (She said as her stomach starts to turn.)
