If you think you're lacking in the weapon department and can't get a gun... Use your imagination, think outside the box.

All three of these men used the weather as a weapon. Forrest was particularly good at using the weather both offensively and defensively.

:dunno: Who knows what to do?

I'm more concerned with long term economic impacts from Covid and national debt right now, than I am with TEOTWAWKI. I'm considering, can I keep my job, what to do if I can't, and how do I keep my health insurance. I was going to buy a new F-150 but I've postponed that plan because I want to keep cash on hand. We're not done with this slump, not by a long shot. As for preps...nothing I wasn't doing before. Grabbing a little ammo here and there, when I find it. Keeping stocked on cleaning supplies. (A year's worth of dish soap is pretty cheap, you know...) Going to grab a large quantity of shampoo and body wash for myself and my kid this week. I figured it's something good to have. Also going to grab a bunch of feminine hygiene products for her too. Better to have and not need, than the other way, when it comes to that, I think...

To add to the good list going I store some cooking oil. Yes animal fat would work but I usually cook most things on cast iron. I bought a liter jug of olive oil that I find is the best oil for those.
I have rabbits for multiple purposes but they can get mites, fleas, parasites so I bought horse dewormer that people have also used to get rid of international parasites as well as treat scabies and help with bedbugs.

I figure parasites and bugs from poor hygiene and waist removal will increase the insects. If not I will have years of medicine for my rabbits.

I agree with good tools also. It wouldn't hurt to have trapper supplies from fleshing knifes to traps. Guns are great but save your ammo for creatures that stand up and run at you.

I have no idea what the future holds as my guess is as good as anyone else. Severe winter weather, continued CV-19, political turmoil are just the top three. We prepare to live and not worry as worry does no good, just clouds one's train of thought. My big battle is with spider mites on a daily basis as my garden is under attack. Do what you can with what you have is about all one can do in this life.

Check the dates on the tanks, older tanks will not be filled locally. For sake of mind, spend the $ and get new tanks. Tractor Supply has the 20's @ $32.00
Sam

I'm cheap. I'd rather spend $5 for a used tank and spend the $27 saved on other preps. Use a self serve LP station to exchange any "out of date" tanks for "in date".

"Prepping for post-election mayhem in the US?"

I say it's a bit too late to start preparing. Preperation should have started years ago!!!!
Yes. I did that in a general sense. I was just wondering if people were doing anything specifically for the election. I am not starting to prep right now. I'm not starting from zero.

I constantly reevaluate my preps. I don't prepare 100% for every possible bad event. I prepare 100% for 100% likely events...although that's not prepping, that is just living. I prepare 50% for 50% likely events...and 25% for 25% likely events. So, as the election approaches, and it seems much more likely that there will be an extended contested election, and that mob violence may increase beyond just minority neighborhoods, then maybe that warrants a change in prepping focus. I may not buy more freeze dried food in the short term; instead, I may pick up the extra firearm for mob defense, maybe the extra gun for my wife or son to use as my backup, or whatever, seems prudent.

How many here are taking care of self/family? Eyeglasses, dental work, surgery if needed?
Sam
I called the eye doctors last week. I have an appointment in Nov. The day before Thanksgiving. Thats how backed up they are because of the covid nonsense.Guess I'll get glasses in Dec

Won't there likely be more riots? I wonder if anyone who lives in an urban or suburban area has considered getting wood or something to cover up broken windows, or to prevent broken windows?

I was hinking of making my van like a Brinks Truck but realized we don't have the money. So I guess driving while white we need a cheaper alternative so I'll wear my hoodie and paint on a few tattos, maybe some purple hair dye.
Of course my luck the first ones we run into will be red neck klansmen.:ghostly:.

What about stock up on neem oil. I don't know much about spider mites but when I was looking to kill fur mites they recommend neem oil/Diatomaceous Earth (DE). DE has an infinite shelf life but neem might work better on them. Just a thought though.

I thought of that. And hiding to live to die another day.Florida oaks are not as strong as Gerogia oaks were. Or I use to could have hid in the tree tops. These tree limbs break too easy.

I think this is the most important part that most people miss.
Saving money for bad times is no fun at all.
But if the country goes into a recession/depression for 4 years, having the best can-goods on hand will not pay:
The mortgage payments,
car payments,
insurance payments,
medical bills,
electric bills, if income is lost.

With welfare, nobody will starve.
But think about life without the above.
Having a good firearm can harvest game, but it won't kill the ones I listed.

... Mobs? All of the above and maybe some neighborhood agreements.
One of my goals for 2020 was to build relationships with neighbors...have some block parties, etc. Then along came covid. That kind of put a wrench in my "be more social" plans. We have had some outside gatherings at the house (one church group of friends, and several family gatherings). But, we never got a neighborhood event organized. Oh well.

I suspect we have a good mix of political views in the neighborhood, but happily, no one puts political signs in their front yard, and no one puts bumperstickers on their cars. I kind of like it that way. (The 5 year old next door did tell me that his dad watches FoxNews, though. :) I thought that was kind of funny. I wonder if the dad knows he is being "outed" by his kid. 😀 )

The best time to prepare is 7 years ago. The second best time is today.

The first step in solving a problem is clearly defining what the problem is.

So to properly direct our investigation of how to address the question of this thread it seems we should examine what circumstances we are preparing for.

What theats should we be preparing for?

Therefore I humbly request that we share what our cocerns are and what we can do to address those issues.

I will withhold mine for now so I can learn mor about Y'all.

COVID made for closer relationships with my neighbors. No meals or parties, but helping each other out. I know we are not on the same political page. I'd bet at least one guy has more food in his house now than he did when we went on stay at orders. He literally had no food at one point, except two 1-pound bag of pinto beans that I gave to him. I found out that other neighbors normally have a deep pantry and could live out of it for months. Neighbors help each other out, and that is important, I think. Different snow storms, different neighbors shovel for each other. My walk has been shoveled many times by others, but I have also shoveled, especially when I know neighbors are not home.

I speak to almost everyone who comes by, but what is interesting is the people who do not respond or speak.

In the documentary "1984" and Nazi Germany, it was the kids that outed their parents.

Just saying

Ben

Thats true also in The Revolurion fathers and sons on different sides.

We keep DE around for several uses.

Had I known how violent and psychotic people would become this year, I would have planned a little differently. So for now I am okay and looking at where I want to be 4 years from now. The more progress I can make before this election is just kudos. (I might want to live in a cave for the whole year of 2024. I’ll keep you posted 😉)

I did for 2 days just to see what it was like since I see lots of people on YouTube did. I didn't notice anything but I only took a teaspoon. Since I use it for animals also I figured I probably should buy a bag just used for people.

" Auferre, trucidare, rapere, falsis nominibus imperium, atque, ubi solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant." Tacitus, your ancient namesake would be in hog heaven today if he tried to write a history of the United States in 2020 AD. He'd be spitting his coffee over the keyboard laughing at our mischiefs.

I certainly can't advise you on survival/prepping tactics, since I don't know your physical status (old and feeble like me?), where you live, your skill set, or anything else. Dawn and I sold our suburban house in Arizona to move to a mini-farm in southern Idaho, which is about as far from our former lives as possible. If you are already in a rural area and have a garden in order, you're on the right path. If you have met and befriended your neighbors, that's even better. Either way good on you for planning!

I will offer a piece of advice regarding a generator; it has to do with the biggest and most serious danger we face if rioting and disease interrupt the functioning of our infrastructure: running out of potable water. We have our own well, but a power outage means that my grid-powered submersible pump ... won't. If you're thinking that a genset is key to maintaining a water supply, be sure to get one that will output 240 volts AC in addition to regular 120 v household current; water pumps usually always run off of 240 v, just like your electric stove and clothes-dryer. I bought in a secondary hand-pump which sits on top of my main pump at about 145 feet; I can get about 1 to 1-1/2 gal/min for emergency water. When I think about it, water is the only thing I need electricity for, although I'd hate to lose my freezer and refrigerator if-and-when the grid goes down.

Which reminds me. How are you folks calling the Losers Reaction to the election? Me, I don't have a clue, really.

My guess is that, if Trump wins in the Electoral College, the Democrats won't do much; but if Trump wins and the Democrats keep the House (which they almost certainly will) and gain the Senate (which they probably won't), the next four years will be just as interesting as the past four.

If Trump loses the EC vote, several things can happen, mostly bad:
  • The day after the election is settled, Trump will already be smelling the DA of the Southern Manhattan District coming after him January 20th, so he resigns the presidency, the Constitution makes Mike Pence President, and Mike pardons Trump just like Jerry Ford did for Dick Nixon.
  • Trump screams foul/fake news and refuses to concede, hoping the SCOTUS will stick its oar in again, which it probably won't, and maybe the US Marshals will escort him out of the White House after Biden's inauguration.
  • Trump will grumble, but he will try and play nice and go on his way without causing too much of a ruckus
  • Trump will accept the election results but figure that he still has more than two months to actually be a president, he may try to "cement his place in history" by doing some really bizarre things both domestically and/or internationally via presidential decree, like changing the name of South Dakota to South Trump or trying to annex Greenland.

For my last pair, I went to Lenscrafters for the optometrist part (eye evaluation and refraction). Normally I go to Kaiser, my medical insurance, because it is free (other than the minimal copay). But I decided to give Lenscrafters a shot since it doesn't cost much to pay out of pocket. They have been making my glasses forever, but this was the first time I tried them for the refraction.

I must say, I was impressed. They did a very thorough and detailed job. I'd say, better than my previous optometrists. I think it would still be better to go see an ophthalmologist if you have significant eye problems, but for just routine eyeglasses prescription updates, and optometrist is just fine.

Note: I am probably rating the individual optometrist I saw at Lenscrafters, and not Lenscrafters as a whole. I imagine they are at least reasonable across the board, but I was quite happy with the individual optometrist I saw. She did an excellent job. To be honest, I was skeptical when my wife suggested I try them, but I ended up being a bit surprised and very impressed.

The Lenscrafters office was wide open for appointments. Same day as I called.

Duncan, you lay out options for Trump winning EC, or losing EC. There are other possibilities, though. Will there even be a clear winner???
  • Will mail-in balloting allow an election night or next day determination of president? Probably not.
  • How long will it take for there to be a settled/agreed set of Electors?
  • Due to mail-in ballots being excluded by the hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) as was seen in the primaries, will there be cries foul of voter suppression, and the generation of competing sets of electors from one or more states?
  • Will Congress have to decide which sets of electors to honor? Will the party currently controlling the House be more likely to pick D electors vs. R electors? Or, will the Congressional delegates from each state pick the electors from their state (as probably should be the case)? If the populace feels like the wrong set of electors was chosen, and the election stolen from them, what then?
  • What will be happening in the country while Congress and the Supreme Court decide these issues?
You mention Trump resigning and Pence pardoning him. I'm not sure that has to happen. I'm not aware of any reason the president can't just pardon himself. I would expect Trump will leave office with a back pocket pardon with his own signature on it. He doesn't seem like the resigning type.
