Spiderwort

[Peanut]

Tradescantia virginiana L. is one of several species of Spiderwort. This one is edible. You can cook the stalks like asparagus. The leaves can be eaten in a salad or cooked as a pot herb. The blooms can be eaten also.

It has medicinal qualities as well. The root is a laxative and juice from the leaves is soothing for bug bites.

It grows in just about every state east of the great plains. As a native wild flower it is really easy to grow.

Spiderwort grows abundantly all over my Property, I love it.

I noticed spiderwort blooming today. Honey bees love this plant.

This is a WEED, covering my yard, nice blooms, but a weed all over my front yard.
The new variety cost like $20.00 + shipping.

My dad's great aunt brought this plant here from Texas about 1940. It was wild when the lady cultivated it on her farm. She controlled it with geese (she had huge flocks of geese she rented to cotton farmers).

Wild plants can be aggressive at times but we control it with a lawnmower when cutting the grass normally, not a problem.
