I have a Katadyn with space for 4 filters. I only put two in and plug the other two holes. If I'm in a hurry I keep the bottom tank fairly low ant the top tank as full as I find practical. The added elevation increases flow through the filter and thereby increases output. I keep plenty of spare filters and spouts. This allows me to fill all the filter spots on my Katadyn.

It also allows me to build extra filters for us or for trade.

2- five gallon (or larger) buckets with lids.
1- (or more) filters.
1- spout.

Mount a spout on the side near the bottom of the bucket.
Set lid loosely on the bottom bucket.
Place the top bucket on the lid of the lower bucket.
Drill a 1/2" hole, or just large enough to fit your filter, typically this would be in the centre but if you want multiple filters then set up the pattern that you wish.
Put the gasket on your filter and put filter through the bucket then the lid and secure using the supplied nut.

I bought three spare spouts so that I can repair my Katadyn or trade up to three filters. I have enough filters to trade off three systems and still have spares.
