Amazing! Instead of relying on the government (which has failed) they are growing their own food. Wonder how long it will be before their government tries to regulated their farming?

Anytime now. Sadly they will come here and demand th same kind of gov slavery they get in their own nations. Why do you think we have turned into a welfare nation aka semi communist socialist.

You’ll do what you have to when you’re starving.
My guess is that few were gardening all along, but when they began having such a hard time finding food, they finally realized that help was not coming. Much like parts of Detroit, where many houses were repossessed, eventually torn down, and some of the land is now being gardened.

When Hugo Chavez seized power the first thing he did was throw farmers off their land then give it to poor people who didn't know how to farm. They went from being self sufficient to importing food in 3 years. People like Danny Glover and Sean Penn cheered the "reforms" of Chavez.

The same thing was done in South Africa. What do these idiots think will happen when land is taken from people who know how to farm and given to people who don't have a clue.

Edit to add... Sorry @elkhound but I digress… Preppers need to watch what is happening here. I just shake my head when I read preppers saying.. “I’ll bug out, hunt and grow vegetables”… clueless.

These folks in Venezuela have a few things to teach preppers.

Yep! Everybody is brave till reality sinks in. Our own government is starting to come after organic growers too. They want their GMO allies to have total control over our food. They already have the money and power and huge supply of seeds in a bunker.Plus an underground city with agricultureal facilities.

did yall know theres been lots of plant breeders as of late and on university level breeding for organic growers and breeding new plants for non industrial uses as well as types that are for seed saving by the grower? even Cornell has gotten into this.theres a new corn out too, called who gets kissed.theres also the open source seed initiative as well. and many many individuals like joseph lofthouse, carol deepe and more doing plant breeding and getting it out to folks wanting it and explaining the hows and whys they do things.

did you know theres a place that only deals with corn.its all non gmo heritage types and they have 28,000 cultivars stored.they do not just store these either they get them into the hands of the people who grow and spread items among those they know.

theres apple breeders as well. i am dealing with some of these myself.

many of these people also live at poverty level since they are so passionate about it as well.

theres something very strange to see in the above vid. do you see it ?
hint..its food.

also to note.these guys are growing on edge of a very large population city and directly below in large poverty population, but yet here they are growing and the masses have not over ran their efforts. do they realize these guys are putting out a lifeline of goods for them? do they fear repercussions if they vandalize the gardens above? are they under protection from local gangs or war lord types? lots of question. but point is its being done and many see it.

Some so called preppers are arrogant fools. Maybe I am a fool in some ways as well.

When it comes to preppers and preparing, some people think they can survive with maybe 20 items, living off the land. I think it would be a rare situation where that happens, someone survives with just that limited amount of things. And my question always is, "Why would you want to do that?" Why not set ourselves up now, with seeds, garden tools, garden beds that have been improved and many other things that could make life easier if society collapses?

I have often wondered about people who live in countries where there are issues, such as North Korea. How many people there survive mostly from gardens? Are gardens allowed or encouraged?

Gardening (& farming) is a skill that takes time to develop. This year, I have worked hard on improving the soil around my home where I have gardened for 30 years. I recently watched a video about making adobe bricks, and I had an aha moment. Adobe is largely clay, with a little sand and some vegetation matter, straw. That is basically what my land is, clay! Add some Colorado sun to that, and we could make bricks. The parts of my yard that were not turned over regularly, amended, planted and regularly watered are like adobe brick! I have amended my soil many times in the past, in sections, but it is an ongoing and constant need. Maybe others have rich, black soil, like my mother had in her garden in South Dakota, but many do not, and I didn't ~ don't.

One thing I did this year was to encourage my neighbors to plant gardens. Some people don't get it, few do.

Good points Elk.

There is a fine line between confident and arrogant. I will eave it open to discussion where that line is.
;)

In his book "Gardening When it Counts" Steve Solomon went into great detail about amending poor soil but then asserted "But if you can afford it, you are better off getting good stuff trucked in." (paraphrased)
