parachutes, seat belts and guns have a couple of things in common.
1. The are used to enjoy and protect lives.
2. If you need one and don't have it, it's too late.

Although this short version of a prayer has been adopted by some 12 step programs for addiction it is just as important for each of us every day.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

If you are atheist or agnostic this form may make it easier to accept:

Might I have (or learn) the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

And to give the proper credit the beginning of it all:
The Full Original Copy of the Serenity Prayer
by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)

God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen.

And a thought from yours truly:
I do not do God's work for I possess neither His wisdom nor His Power.
God is capable of doing his own work. I can only play my small part in it.

Sometimes it is more important to know when to shut up, even when you are right.

If you have to argue or discuss the truth you are either unsure it is the truth or trying to get others to believe as you do.
Knowing the truth is enough.
