You are sitting at home when a Civil Danger Warning (CDW) alert is sounded though the National Terrorism Advisory System. You don't know what the threat is, but the alert indicates that it is going to be catastrophic and nationwide. You have 15 minutes to do something, to call someone, to seek shelter, to evacuate, to... whatever. What would you spend that 15 minutes doing?

Call the wife to tell her, "COME HOME NOW!" which she'll ignore.

Confirm our children aware of the alert.

Load six and top off the magazines.

    Wait.

If it was right now, I would call the wife and tell her to get home NOW. We have a code phrase to let her know this is not a drill. Which would result in her instantly stopping what she was doing and immediately leaving for home using a secondary route, which takes about 7-10 minutes even in moderate traffic. I would then call the older kids not living with us and my parents to make sure they were heading to their homes as I relocated the kids at home to the man cave (safe room). I would then wait, well armed and with comms, for the Mrs. to get home so I could put the house on lock down with the door braces in place. I would also check the Fusion Center to see if I could gain access to more intel as to what the threat is.

I would immediately get a cup of coffee. Then leave a message for each of our kids. By that time the coffee would be cool enough to drink.

I would get out the portable multi-band radio and do some online searching for more information. Nothing else to really do until I either find out what it is, or whatever it is happens.

The only extra ‘prep’ I could think of is to get out the plastic, line the bathtub and fill it for a bit more potable water.

Depends on where i'm at, If at work I will call the wife and say i'll be there in a moment to pick her up might as well get as close to home as I can., If it is her day to have the car she will have to stop at, at least two stores on the way over.

Make a fresh pot of coffee. Fill the WaterBob. Turn up the thermostat a few degrees. Fill the thermos and make another pot. Bring a wheelbarrow full of coal into the garage. Pull out the ammo box of loaded magazines and open the safe.

The last five are the only possibility for me. Neighbors are likely to contact me, the sirens I can probably hear, I assume friends will be too busy and the family is mostly out of touch - even on the weekends.
I would go to the shelter and wait for more news (which I expect will be lies).

Well, if you don't have any means to get the alert..
I guess you will not know when it hits.

I would turn on the television to see if there was any information and I would text my daughter to give her a heads up, but like Lazy L's wife, she would carry on and do as she was doing.

Then I would begin to put all of my bags for bugging out by the front door--backpack (loaded with a variety of basic gear), camping stove bag (includes stoves, fuel, more lighters, and Coleman portable oven), bag of sleeping gear (sleeping bag, pad, hammock, emergency blanket), winter clothing bag, tent, put together a food bag or two (I do this fairly frequently for house sitting), make sure my overnight bag is in the car, water jugs, first aid bags, technology bag (laptop, chargers, external hard drive.). Staging.

If all I know is there is an alert, it's make some coffee and see what I need to do. If the wife is out, ask her to get home posthaste. If I'm out, it's get home ASAP. Now it's a waiting game, for more information.

Without more knowledge of the threat I would load some stuff in the truck and be prepared to leave if needed. Gather other stuff in the basement and be prepared to ride out a storm. I would have a ham radio going to try and learn more details.

Catastrophic and nationwide? Call my oldest and tell her to come up, now. I'd call my sister but her boyfriend and his family are completely useless so they cannot come. I'd leave it up to her to come or stay with them.

ETA: I'd call hubbys best friend to. He's practically family and both him and his wife will work.

If it is a nuclear attack I'll be fine. The two nearest targets are north of me and even if a ground burst hit Hanford the fallout will go considerably north of me.
If it's an invasion then I will have plenty of time because the concentration of fighting will be near the cities.

Not much in Alaska worth using a nuclear bomb on the surface.

Anchorage and Fairbanks both have bases plus airports capable of launching military aircraft. There are numerous early warning facilities dotted around the State. The ports, harbours, and pipeline are strategic targets. In WWII the only actual invasion of the United States was in Alaska. CA, WA, OR, ID, and HI received attacks but no troops.

Text the wife and get her home. Text the kids (all adults with their own families). Head for the basement - fire up the TV and the shortwave to get more info. Break out my checklist and start running through it.
