This is a picture of Clemence Gourneau. She was born in 1847 to Joseph (Souza/Kah-isig-ewid) and Judith (Delorme) Gourneau. He was the grandson of Chief Wild Rice and Clemence was the maternal granddaughter to Turtle Mountain Chief Kah-ishpa Gourneau (1817-1917).

The Louis Riel Institute includes a copy of her 1943 obituary; she died at age 96 and was known as Grandma Berger.

Clemence married Isaie Berger in 1870, when she was 23 years old, and they were blessed with 12 children. Her obituary notes that she "was not fortunate in having much schooling, but at that she was a bright and industrious woman: was very keen about telling her early life and how she came to settle in the Judith Basin" in Montana.

In her early years, they roamed the prairies of Montana and the Dakotas, following the buffalo trails with no thoughts of settling down. She noted that they endured many hardships - not being able to find buffalo or other game, and occasionally even water was hard to find. "Yet somehow, we were all happy and with all our miseries we never heard any complaints."

They finally settled down near Chinook, Montana, near the Milk River.

The caption was West Virginia, 1938. There was a statement about coal mining... he must be on his way to work, miners don't look like this coming home.

Are those potatoes on the roof? Odd place to store them if so.

I hate to burst the newbies bubble, but we were driving EV's even 60 years ago...

Anybody besides me remember the sparks from the strap at the top of the pole to the ceiling?
They included long contact poles that scraped along an electrified grid ceiling and transferred power to the cars. The distinctive poles remain to this day on many bumper car attractions.
