Lake Erie finally froze over just before christmas and put a stop to the daily 3-5 inches. Then is was just a normal snowy winter in buffalo

In Buffalo Summer is two weeks of bad skiing. Not my cup of tea. Glad you survived. Further evidence of why I will never go.

Locally there's a nasty flu going around. I got several family members missing out on turkey and dressing. A month ago there was a strong stomach component with the flu. About 2 weeks ago the tummy upset part went away and was replaced with a strong lung component. Settled in the lungs, coughed for weeks. Haven't heard if it changed again.

@Alaskajohn Doesn't he have radios? Can he be reached that way? Snow can pile up and make doing anything a pain in the butt. Once in buffalo ny i saw it snow 28 straight days, started around thanksgiving. Had lake effect snow daily and storms every 3 or 4 days. I had to dig snow away from the eves of my house. He had talked about getting some sort of comms, but not sure if he ever did. No cell service in the area and only one crappy ISP.

He was also somewhat discouraged by the lack of hard core survivalist so hope that’s not the cause. .
I think I the vast majority are here exactly because it hasn't attracted that segment of preppers and it shouldn't. The Internet has many other places that cater to that mindset or level of preparedness.

I think you are right about this.

He is not young and lives out there in a small cabin. None of us are going to live forever. While we can prepare and do the best we can, we are not all the same.

I think of his cabin, but not him, like Ted Kaczynski's cabin, small like the home my mother grew up in, 12 by 24 feet. Who will know when he is deceased? Who can and will find him?

I've always wondered how you get internet out to a remote homestead. Is satellite the way to do it? Maybe that service that Elon Musk provides? No matter how remote, I would still want to have some form of reliable communications. We are all dependent on others - to a greater or lesser extent, depending on how we live.

I am aive, and sheltering in Soldotna, Alaska. I am safe for now. But death was near twice lastweek. I was saved from certan death by the mailman.

I heard from Sourdough! I don’t know any more than this message but am sure there will be more to come.

I am alive........very-very lucky to have survived. Still far from 100% saved. I am sheltering far from my cabin. I am safe for now. Feel free to post this information

If and when something were to happen to you, do you have a plan for someone to let us know? I've been saying we all could or should.
NO known way to do that at this time.

I could not even comtact anyone for emergency extraction for two weeks.

How bad did you get hit with that storm? That had to have complicated things if you got hit as hard I a suspect you did.

Very-Very bad. 42" of heavy wet snow in 20 hours, then another 14" the next day, grid down, phones down (STILL).

“You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.” — Admiral James Stockdale.

For the last 19 days, this has been my super sucky reality, with no known improvement yet insight.

That STOCKDALE, perfectly expresses my current situation. But I am safe for right now.

That storm dumped almost knee deep snow for us. Took me 8 hours to clear my driveway between getting stuck and fixing equipment.

Glad you are someplace safe.

Were the last 2-1/2 weeks horrors due to being cut off from the rest of the world, or due to injury, accident, medical condition, etc.? I don't mean to pry into what the issue was if it's personal. Ignore my question if that's the case.

If the issue was simply being cut off (or what happened to you after the triggering event of being cut off), then I would use that to evaluate my current preps. You are one of the more prepared people and advocates on this forum. I am not - only good for a few months at most. But if 2-1/2 weeks almost took out a highly prepped person, then I'll probably remain content with my current prep levels.

Most people, even here, don't know the reality of living where you are your only responder. Where your skills, resources, and mental strength are the only thing keeping your soul earthbound.
